I know that the wedding dress search is one of the funnest aspects of planning and one of the biggest parts of “the day” as a whole – but man – I did NOT know that there would be a 3-part – ahem,- ‘saga’ – that would be surrounding my pick.

Well, she looks relaxed.
For those of you who did not read my last post – here is a brief synopsis: I’m at Kleinfeld’s, Randy (love!) recommends a dress for me that is at the peak of my budget, I try it on anyway, I fall in love, I walk out of the room to meet my mini-entourage.
I wish I could say I was surprised by the fact that Olive Mom and I had different tastes in what we liked/disliked about certain gowns – but I did have a feeling that this would happen. To say enough so that you get my gist without completely giving away what dresses I liked – it boils down to a core disagreement. Olive Mom is a huge fan of embellishments in the form of sparkles, lace, etc….while Olive Bud is, well, not.
I’m not against embellishments (see this post about how I actually thought I changed my mind about them in Round 1) – but the dress I had on happened to have none. And I loved it. And I didn’t care. However, Olive Mom, Olive Grandma, and Olive Aunt were not so keen on this dress. To them, it looked plain.

While searching for “The Dress”, Moon Dude and I traveled to a wedding of one of his groomsmen on Long Island, NY. On our way home from the wedding, we stopped in NYC for the day to enjoy its sights, sounds, and flavors (Me: more the sights and sounds, Moon Dude: more the flavors). Ok, confession-time: I had (have) a slight addiction to “Say Yes to the Dress”, and although I love the show, I felt it left me with a great pressure to find “The Dress”. It also led me to fantasize about going to Kleinfelds. However, my wedding budget wouldn’t let me (and also maybe a little bit because they had no appointments on the weekend we were in town, but who is checking anyways?). So upon more research I found an interesting alternative.

I had my first experience with wedding dress shopping this weekend. I have to say, it went better than I expected, though still somewhat stressful. I wasn’t particularly “ready” to start this part of the wedding planning process, but wanted to take advantage of my parents visiting town. By “ready” I mean I had wanted to drop another 10 lbs or so before starting that particular adventure. But alas, I gotta work with what I’ve got!
I picked out two small wedding shops that didn’t require advance appointments (sweet!); and lucky for us, while at both shops, I essentially had the place to myself. Surprising for a Saturday afternoon! I probably tried on over 40 dresses of various cuts and styles and came away with 2 that I liked. Here is the front contender now:

Once I figured out what type of wedding gowns look awful on me, it wasn’t too long until I learned what flatter my body type.

From sophiatolli.com
It turned out that sweetheart necklines worked best for my decolletage– mustn’t hide my light under a bushel. Gowns that nipped in at the waist and were somewhat hip-hugging– to my surprise — also worked well. As a girl with hips, I was always taught to go for full and A-line skirts to disguise my curves, but it turns out that a more fitted silhouette looks better. So I ruled out ballgowns and the poofier of the A-lines.
