Special Touches – DIY Project

September 13th, 2011 by

I don’t know about anyone else, but I LOVE white lights, candles, lanterns — pretty much anything that sparkles.  I think they are very romantic and definitely create a certain ambiance to any occasion.  Where Lavender Dude and I got married, there were two large maple trees.  We decided to utilize them and placed seating between the two trees for the guests.  I truly loved the way the trees drooped down forming an arch around the guests and the area where we stood to get married.  Like much of my wedding planning, it became a DIY project.  I started by buying about 50 of these lanterns:

The Nitty Gritty

February 1st, 2011 by

So we met with a florist last weekend. Whew, that appointment was definitely more than I had bargained for!  Lovebug and I had previously talked about what flowers we wanted in a road trip we had taken over the summer. He was content with having my mother and I go to the florist while he was at work knowing that we had pretty much already picked everything. Man, was he wrong.

Our appointment, which we were told would take about 2 hours, took 2 1/2 and we didn’t even get to reception decor! I was really pleased with the florist we met with, Nancy, and LOVED her ideas. I did not realize, however, how much stuff I needed to know already! She asked all kinds of questions that I really had not even thought about yet. Here are a sampling of them:

  • How big are the flower girl baskets?
  • What color dress is everyone wearing who is getting a corsage?
  • Do we want pin-on corsages or wrist corsages?
  • What type of wrap do we want for the bouquets?
  • What color wraps do we want for the bouquets?
  • Do we have swatches of both my dress and the bridesmaid dresses?

Tropical Meets Marsh — Worlds that should never combine

October 12th, 2010 by

Cattails!  The word that changed my wedding.

Cymbie Dude surprised me by taking an interest in the flowers for our wedding.  This was the last area I thought he would want to give input.  It all started with our plan to get married at a lighthouse and my wish to avoid a “beach” themed wedding.  Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the beach and actually had always planned on being married on a beach.

A lil background on us:  Cymbie Dude and I are very laid back people.  Jeans and t-shirts folks.  Combine that with the laid back feel of the OBX and you have a natural, casual theme for our wedding.  He then uttered a word that has forced me to be creative…Cattails.  Who ever heard of cattails at a wedding?  I sure hadn’t.  None of my friends had.  But that was Cymbie Dude’s one request and I was remiss to deny him.  I called up a few florists and chatted with them but it wasn’t until I spoke with Brenda with The Embellishers, that it finally gelled how cattails could be used in a wedding and the wedding still have feminine touches.  She thought for a moment then ran with it, spitting out various other flowers (all of which I had to Google) that we could combine to create a beautiful bouquet.  I told her cattails and beach grass and she came up with amazing ideas.

Below are some of the photos I found for centerpieces that combine the green cymbie orchids, grasses and cattails.

Maga Bud’s Wedding Decorations

September 13th, 2010 by

It was a whirlwind experience to create a concept from start to finish. I did it! I was able to pull together a gorgeous wedding with my husband. The first image is the view of our ceremony. A third of our ballroom was decorated like this. The blue, purple and pink flowers accentuated the tiffany blue. I just love our aisle centerpieces and archway. The centerpieces were then transferred to our guest tables and the archway was moved to decorate the cake table (see picture #2)

Our Decor

August 4th, 2010 by

One thing I have absolutely loved about BridalBuds is the feedback I have gotten from everyone! I had so many questions along the way, and my wedding colors were probably one of the biggest dilemmas I faced.  After much thought, I ended up going with Coral and Turquoise/Tiffany Blue.  I was pretty excited about our colors given the room we were working with, and the amazing natural light that filled the room especially during the sunset. Of course with all the candles we had, it was just as beautiful at night.

Here are a few pics of our decor, with a special thanks to Charlene Lopez at the Key Largo Hilton, Blooming Design and Events and Edda’s Cake Designs for making our wedding an absolute dream.  The creativity that went into designing this amazing scene was well beyond our wildest dreams.

LIGHTS, Camera, Action

April 16th, 2010 by

I’ve been agonizing over our decor proposal for a while now… mostly because its way out of our budget, and there were so many things I didn’t realize you “need.” One of those things is lighting.  We are blessed to have such a beautiful room at the Key Largo Hilton for our reception.  It has amazing windows on three of the four walls and overlooks the ocean.  Sounds great… till you think about how all that natural light will disappear as the sun sets, and you don’t want your guests to be left in the dark.  I have started to do some research on lighting options for reception venues both inside and out and I thought I would share them with you just in case you need a little inspiration.

Au Natural Centerpieces

March 3rd, 2010 by

Moving along in the unique centerpiece series, we are on to au natural options.  I have to admit I am quite obsessed with some of these options and believe that they are also truly DIY.  It is amazing you can take something as plain as leaves and turn it into a centerpiece masterpiece! I also found on Save-On-Crafts.com a lot of great, inexpensive options for branches, logs, greenery and glass.

Tiffany Blue Ribbon

February 15th, 2010 by

I found a tiffany blue ribbon that comes in three different sizes. It matched my main wedding color! MOH found it at Michaels. I visited three different Michaels in order to get as much of this ribbon as I could.

We had the color swatch with us and it was a perfect match! I purchased over 30 rolls of ribbon in thin, medium and large sizes. I thought the ribbon would be useful for the following items:

Playing Up Pearls

February 9th, 2010 by

Being that I’ll be having a beach wedding, I like the connection with “pearls”. They mesh perfectly with all three components of my theme “simple”, “elegant”, and “beachy”. So I plan on incorporating them into several aspects of the decor. Here are a few of my ideas:

Light Up the Table

February 3rd, 2010 by

As I mentioned last week, I have decided to do a series on centerpieces that are far from ordinary.  Next up… candles!  They add a beautiful glow to your reception and can set a great mood well through the night.  They also make for fairly easy DIY options, and not to mention a big budget saver.  You can float them, wrap them or stand them alone.  They come in a vast array of colors, sizes and even smells.  What’s not to like?
