Just this past weekend, I went to our church to view another wedding and get some ideas. At that wedding, I noticed two ladies dressed in black, running around organizing everything. At that point I started to wonder — should I be considering day-of coordination services?

My wedding is pretty much planned, I’m very organized and feel like I’m ahead of the game, but I’m still thinking it might be nice to have someone around on the big day to make sure everything runs smoothly. I’ve called around a bit for some quotes (and, to be honest, a lot of people are no longer available 3 months out) and this service is pretty pricey in a city like D.C., but I still think it might be worth it.

Whew! I’m tired! I have just arrived home from a weekend of wedding planning, and I have to say that I feel much better now. I think we have a solid understanding of what is happening for the rehearsal, rehearsal dinner, wedding morning, ceremony and reception. I might be even close to having a timeline!
First big thing we did was meet with our day-of coordinator. I know for some people, this is an unnecessary expense, but my parents felt strongly enough that they added it to the list of must-have’s. My stepmom would worry and panic the whole morning, and I really just want her to relax and enjoy the wedding. So, we have hired Kate from Savvy Brides, based in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Savvy is a unique place, they have everything from wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses, tuxes, invites, and wedding planning. I was impressed by the thorough preparation that goes into one day-of coordinator. The questionnaire is quite extensive and helps plan the timeline and responsibilities of the coordinator.

I knew I didn’t want to hire a wedding planner to take care of all the details I would love to plan. However, the idea of having someone be there the day of my wedding so my friends, family, and I don’t have to worry about anything has always been appealing. Why not have a professional run the show and put together a beautiful spread for me?

After getting a few quotes from event planners and wedding coordinators in my area, I thought their starting prices were out of our budget. But, I was not deterred. I asked potential vendors if their pricing was negotiable if I reduced or got rid of some of the services in the Day Of package that I could do without (like putting together a list of duties for the wedding party that I do not have). I also checked if they had a la cart services available in lieu of set packages.
