I was apprehensive to just go with the bakery recommended by our reception venue, so we met with the baker.
Andrea put Lilac Dude and me at ease with a book full of photos and a great go to attitude. She recommended that we bring in pictures of what we wanted and not just try to pick out something from the book.
So we returned to Johnnie’s Bakery in Canton with a few photos that we wanted merged into one cake. She assured us that it was possible and she definitely delivered! The cake was exactly what we wanted… and I mean it looked exactly how I pictured it in my mind.

While we pride ourselves in having a very “unique” and “us” wedding, one of the most unique aspect of it all was our wedding cake. We loved it, and so did out guests. If you recall, our cake was made out of four wheels of goat cheese. Cypress Grove has two varieties of cheese, Truffle Tremmor and Humboldt Fog that we used for our cake. They are the most delicious cheeses in the world, and when stacked just right, they resemble an actual wedding cake.
Our cake in all its splendor!

Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first. ~Ernestine Ulmer
It’s no secret with my friends and family that I am a fan of dessert! After my dress this was the next item on my list…my initial thoughts were to do many different varieties of sweet treats – a dessert bar.

We should really all remember that. I have no intentions of offending anyone with this post, so bear with me. I have watched my fair share of Ace of Cakes and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, those cakes just never look very tasty to me! There are people out there who like fondant and all of its stiff, stale marshmallow-ness. I. am. not. I’m a big fan of icing! The gooeyness, the lickability, and all other types of Wonka-ness about it. Buttercream, cream cheese, you name it, I’m loving it. In my opinion, if you want a cake that looks like a statue, you should get a statue instead of trying to cover yummy cake in something that most of your guests will peel off and end up just eating the middle.
Lovebug feels the same about our wedding cake. We’ve known what we wanted in a cake for a while it was just a matter of finding the baker. The mother of one of my childhood friends has always been my favorite baker of pretty much anything. She is an excellent cook and baker! Lovebug and I threw my mother a surprise 60th birthday party last year and I asked for her to make the cake. Never disappointing, she made the most delicious lemon cake with lemon filling and buttercream icing. It was so good Lovebug and I started talking with her about possibly doing our wedding cake.
It’s always a gamble asking someone you know to be a “vendor” for your wedding. What if you don’t like something or another mishap happens? I’ve known this woman for almost my entire life so I’m pretty confident in our decision to ask her to make our cake. She’s an excellent baker and also has an eye for the design aspect. She’s made wedding cakes before and they’ve all turned out great. We met with her recently to go over what we envisioned for our cake and whether or not she thought it was possible for her to do.
We like the simplicity of this one with the ribbons around the bottom. We want the cascading flowers shown here as well

The bakery sent us home with three 6″ cakes in white, chocolate and marble with the assurance that we could also sample their other three flavors at another time (when they had notice that we would want samples, they were able to provide us with samples on the spot surprisingly). The other flavors were spice, almond, and yellow, which weren’t on our list.

Since the samples were fairly large and not expected with called Lilac Dude’s parents and said, “hey we have dessert!” That won us a lunch invitation to a possible place to have a rehearsal dinner (which is a whole different blog post for another time).

I have been sketching wedding cakes and looking at pictures but when it came down to it, Lilac Dude and I didn’t have a whole lot of direction on cake.
All I knew is that Lilac Dude wanted an impressive cake and preferred that it be tall. I knew that I liked round tiers and white icing.

We decided to go to the bakery where we had a discount due to our hall rental for a first visit. We were impressed by the fact that the baker was enthusiastic about doing whatever we wanted, she liked doing new things and was able to send us home with cake samples! After talking logistics about servings and tiers we had much more direction.

Apple Sauce and I just got back from our first cake tasting! We met with the very lovely and talented Betsy at Nine Cakes, a boutique cake studio in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, and we were pretty much sold as soon as we walked in. In fact, before we even tasted anything, Apple Sauce whispered to me, “I like her. Let’s give her money!”

I may be the only bride on Earth who doesn’t watch “Say Yes to the Dress” but I still get my fill of reality wedding tv. The other day I was watching “Amazing Wedding Cakes” and inspiration struck. I whipped out my sketch pad and started sketching out some wedding cakes.
I was proud of my sketches until I tried drawing a cake with offset tiers. The outline looked more like a tugboat then a cake. I really saw no way of salvaging the design so I added some steam, water and an anchor.

In my last Post, I talked about the cake tasting disasters. But now on to tasting #3 and our cake!
Tasting #3:
I had done some research and found a tiny bakery about 45 minutes away from our venue. The place did wedding cakes but they were mostly a catering company/bakery in the heart of Annapolis, MD, called Palate Pleasers. When we walked in the owner created us with a huge smile and FINALLY I was excited about our cake. I had brought some pics to show him, giving him a rough idea of what we wanted.
Idea #1:

CAKE – Of course we’re having a wedding cake. CC’s favorite dessert is yellow cake with chocolate frosting, so it was a no brainer that there would be cake at our reception. But, it’s not all about the groom – I’m the bride! (Jeez, that sounded a bit bridezilla, heehee.) As much as I like yellow cake with chocolate frosting, I’ve eaten a lifetime’s worth in the last 6 months, since I’ve moved in with CC (I seem to bake one every other week for him.). I definitely didn’t want that to be our only wedding cake.

I ♥ carrot cake with cream cheese frosting… yum. I’ve also been really into baking lately, so I figured baking our own wedding cakes, and having a variety of them, would be a great way to save money and make it interesting. Not everyone thought it was such a great idea, however. I would have a lot going on that last week before the wedding, which may have helped my mentor and his wife decide to kindly offer to gift us our wedding cakes. Of course we said yes, one less thing for us to have to worry about! My mentor already had a baker in mind. He teaches with a talented man, Peter Dumont, who is going to create 3 wonderful cakes for our wedding.
