The absolute first thing that engaged couples are supposed to do is set a date.
The second thing is to make the guest list.

Lilac Dude and I drafted our list and thought, “Great! We’re done!” Then the list took on a life of its own and started changing.
I was a little surprised at first about all of the changes to the guest list, but sitting back and allowing it to change on its own has been a good approach.

Being that Lilac Dude and I are both students we approach wedding planning like we do our education. We have been setting deadlines, crafting assignments and taking field trips.

My command center for wedding planning AND school work (Personal Photo)
Since we obviously don’t hate school this has been a pretty good approach. I feel like I’m “studying” venues and traditions when I’m browsing through blogs and the articles that I send to Lilac Dude are “assigned readings”. I just finished a very large “art assignment”… the flowers! I’m proud to say that all corsages, boutonnieres and bouquets are done!

My cousin and I were talking this week and she told me about a wedding decision I should be aware of. I’m so glad she talked to me because I would have never realized that this was a decision that Lilac Dude and I would need to talk about.
She said that at all the weddings she’d attended that she noticed at the receptions that aside from when the bride and groom were eating at the head table and their first dance she never saw them together! When she was preparing for her own wedding she made it clear to her groom that she wanted to be with him for their entire reception, and she was!

Even before we got engaged, Plumeria Dude and I were determined to be sensible about our sometime-in-the-future wedding. The cardinal rule: absolutely no debt. Though I’ve had various financial disasters in the past, a couple of years ago I got religion via Oprah’s Debt Diet and Suze Orman. One of the first things they will tell you to do is to pay down your credit card debt completely. It took me a while and some major life changes (including getting a new job and radically changing my consumption and commuting habits) but I did it.
