Periwinkle Dude still teases me about something I did the night we got engaged. We were at the top of the Empire State Building, it was mid-February, very windy, and incredibly cold. After standing outside for so long, nature called so I excused myself to the ladies’ room. As I was about to wash my hands I worried about getting my new and sparkly ring wet, or worse — dropping it down the sink! So I (irrationally) slipped the ring off my finger and — not knowing where to put it once I took it off — held on to it in my teeth.

Yay we get to talk about rings, something I had no opinion on until we started the “Engagement Discussion” in June. All I knew when my fiancé brought this up was 1) NO BLOOD DIAMONDs 2) I like Platinum. My Fiance would bring quizzes for me- even when we were out to dinner! The first quiz looked something like this:
 Blue Nile
When I decided I couldn’t possibly choose one, he said “Could you cross out the ones you don’t like then?” Well that was easy!
Princess- too trendy.
Emerald- would make my chubby fingers too fat.
Marquise- too 80s.
Oval- just not right.
Pear- is for eating.
Heart- is in my chest cavity.

Unlike many other women I did not have a definitive list of guidelines specifying the cut or the carat of my diamond. I only wanted something that was conflict-free. What’s the most practical way to go about this, we asked ourselves? Conflict-free diamonds from Canada and Russia are very pricey. Not practical. Antique stores can be hit or miss. Not practical.
But my wonderful, logical, Spock-like engineer, Cherry Dude, found the perfect solution: I Do Now I Don’t a site that sells previously owned engagement rings. I am very careful as to whom I share this information with, as many people are very judgmental, but I can’t think of a more responsible way to buy a ring. The rings are appraised by a jeweler and held in escrow while the jeweler verifies that what the seller has said about the ring is wholly true.

Now people react in one of two ways when I tell them the aforementioned way we bought my engagement ring. “What a fabulous deal!” or the superstitious “I could never wear a divorcee’s old ring.” To which I politely nod. Guess which viewpoint I agree with? I’ll give you a hint…

During the wedding planning process, it’s easy to get caught up in the little details of the wedding – “this flower or that flower”, “which centerpiece looks better?”, “should we serve crab puffs or crab cakes?” That’s not to say those decisions aren’t important, but they aren’t everything, and they probably won’t matter much in the long run.
Sometimes, it’s nice just to think back to the beginning, and recently I’ve spent a lot of time thinking back to when we got engaged.

Inspired by Cotton Bud’s post about wedding rings, I thought I’d share with you what we are thinking.
My engagement ring is a beautiful princess cut diamond on a simple band. I absolutely love it, but worry a bit sometimes about taking it on vacation. We just found out that our renters insurance policy only covers if it is stolen from our apartment, and not if I lost it, or if the diamond fell out (which happened to a coworker of mine). So, it makes me nervous to take it on long journeys where we’ll be swimming and hiking a lot (i.e. our honeymoon). When Cotton Bud said she was going to buy a simple band for such occasions, it inspired me!

This week, I had an annoying encounter with an acquaintance. When I referred to Calla Lily Dude as “my fiance” she looked down at my left hand and said (with clear pity in her voice) “Oh, no ring?” When I explained that I proposed and that we both wear engagement rings, she smiled politely and said, “That’s so sweet, but it’s not a real engagement ring.”
I tell you, it took all the strength in me not to cause her bodily harm… Some nerve, right? Just because my engagement ring doesn’t follow tradition doesn’t make it any less “real.”

“Get the F out” is what I first said when I heard of people making their own wedding bands. Well that, and picturing some awful hammered mess of a ring. Noper, my bestie Jill and her fiance just made their own bands, and they are fantastic!

When I look at people’s wedding albums, I’m always totally in love with the shots of the rings! Since I don’t want our photographer to have to spend loads of time setting up all kinds of wedding ring shots on our Big Day, I thought I would take a stab at it myself. Doing it yourself can make it a very personal image.

I’m usually a pretty outspoken person, but there are some things that I keep close. I almost love this idea too much to share just because I want one- and I would want it to be as unique to Pansy Dude and I as I could possibly keep it. I think it’s that perfect little touch that makes something so special because only the two of you know about it.
Since I recently came across this on Brooklyn Bride’s Blog, I figured the cat was not only out of the bag- but half way down the street by now… and I might as well pass it on.

Especially if you have some kind of cryptic message that means something only to the two of you.
I already have a ring that I love but I think I want one for my right hand. Maybe on my pinky?
