Engagement Photos: Are They Important?

December 11th, 2009 by

After Iris Dude and I got engaged, one of the first things that showed up on our “to-do” lists was to have engagement pictures taken. We debated with each other – was this really important?

In the end, we decided it was worth it, and I’m so glad we did. I love the pictures we had taken!

Picaboo – Our Guest Book

November 2nd, 2009 by

Photo books seem to have become a very popular way to easily add a personalized touch to any one of life’s events – from new babies to new houses, its a fun DIY project that you can cherish forever.

I’ve seen many buds post here about their personalized photo books, and became more and more intrigued about creating a book of my own using the engagement photos that Orchid Dude and I took.

I had explored a few sites and checked out what they had to offer in terms of design and overall look, and through the recommendation of Canadian Living Magazine, I decided to check out Picaboo.

In addition to creating a book with our engagement photos, I wanted to turn it into a guest book so that I could easily share them with my wedding guests.

Lessons Learned in Photography

August 31st, 2009 by

My engagement photos were over three months ago but I still have very vivid thoughts of “do-overs” with the photos. Our photo shoot was literally an entire 9 hour day and by the end, we were exhausted, but that is when some of our better photos popped up.

Lessons Learned from Engagement Photos, but could apply to the Wedding Photos:

1. I read up on E-pic sessions and it was recommended to leave your purses, bags, etc. behind and just take your car key. I disagree. Take everything you need: lipstick/gloss, compact, hair spray, make up for touch ups, mirror, and snacks! (especially if you are diabetic, like me)….

2. Keep your lip sticks, gloss, keys, etc. in a bag. DO NOT keep them in your pocket like I did. D’oh….

Engaged? Now What?

July 25th, 2009 by

With an engagement ring comes new obsessions—you collect magazines under your bed, you dream of wedding dresses, music, food, décor….all things wonderful and all things wedding. How do you get from the I will to the I do? I feel like an old pro at this because this was not the route I took to planning…

Pictures in the Park

July 3rd, 2009 by

When Orchid Dude and I took our engagement photos last winter, there was a fresh blanket of snow on the ground and the sun was shining…but it was bitter cold!  We lasted about an hour by the time my friend Dee (of Purple Martini Photography) could see that our toes were frozen and we were ready to wrap up.  Our goal was to finish the second half of our shoot when the weather warmed up and we could comfortably wear open-toe shoes.

Our Engagement Photos!

May 6th, 2009 by

As I mentioned earlier, my fiancé and I are getting married in a movie theater in Madison, Wisconsin, and are playing up the movie theme a bit. In preparation, I asked our wonderful photographer Molly, of Mthree Studios, to take a few old fashioned movie type photos, for either a guestbook, poster display or possibly our invitations. We weren’t sure how much we’d like them, and I hadn’t loved the idea of a photo on our invites. Until I saw them. I love these photos and am so excited to use one on our invites and to find ways to display a few around our receptions.

Engagement Picture “Regrets”

March 21st, 2009 by

Although me and Calla Lily Dude don’t consider ourselves to be the most photogenic people in the world, let me start off by saying that I am VERY HAPPY with how our engagement pictures turned out.

But, I do have some “regrets.” By “regrets” I don’t mean “this was a mistake and I wish I had never done it,” I mean more like “I’m very happy, but I wish I had done a few things differently so I could be extremely happy.”

DIY: Save the Dates for Dummies

February 1st, 2009 by

Since we’re having a destination wedding, one of the first things on the list of things to do was to send out Save the Dates to our guest list. I wanted this to be a relatively simple project. Though I love the look of magnets and more complex Save the Date packages, keeping costs down and stress levels low took precedence. We decided to plan an engagement photo session with the intent of using the results for Save the Date postcards, wedding website and possibly our guest book at the wedding itself.

Getting Ready for Engagement Photos

January 30th, 2009 by

I am so excited that me and Calla Lily Dude are taking our engagement photos this week with our photographer. Here are the details:

The Location

We will be taking our pictures at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) campus, our alma mater. We met in college and still live in Davis, so it seemed fitting that we do our engagement session on campus. I found pictures of another couple’s engagement photos taken at UC Davis (in the Arboretum, where we plan on taking some pictures as well), so I am even more excited!
