Designing my own wedding invites was something that I always planned on doing. And I truly enjoyed doing it! I sort of new what I was looking for before I ever started, which in some ways made it easier (like choosing fonts) but in others more difficult (like finding the perfect decorative element). Here’s the finished product…

After doing the invitations I was on a roll, so I continued with the theme of western fonts and the same decorative element and created a whole wedding stationery including response cards, direction/accommodation cards, wrap around address labels, thank you notes, rehearsal invites, reserved tables…the list goes on! (Ceremony programs are still to come)
When it came time to print everything I decided to do my research. At the local print shop I asked them about my paper choices – they could special order the type of paper I wanted (recycled brown kraft paper) and envelopes and do the the printing for $$$. I also asked for a quote if they just did the printing and it came out to $$. I had already looked and priced paper online and knew it was much cheaper that the paper the printer was proposing we use. So being the frugal bride that I am I went ahead and ordered the paper and envelopes online and dropped them off at the printer’s when they arrived. By doing this I saved $200 and got exactly what I was looking for!
I’d love to hear from the Garden…did you DIY your invitations? Are you pleased with the results?
As mentioned in my photography post one of my bridesmaids was married this past year. In planning her wedding, her “thing” was the invitations. As I alluded to, they were quite spectacular. I thought you all might enjoy a few photos of them as well as her description of how to make them.

Is it possible to be in love with paper? I came home from work yesterday to a big box waiting for me on our kitchen counter….OUR INVITATIONS!!! I probably spent a month designing the invite, rehearsal card, and response card myself. Then I saved them as PDF files and sent them off to Vista Print to be made. I was nearly jumping up and down and crying happy tears when I pulled them from the box as I wondered if they were going to be as perfect in person as I had expected them to be They were. They were worth the time and all of the revisions it took to make them perfect. Here they are -

Please excuse the black splotches where I got rid of identifying information.
Has anyone else designed their own invites? If so, I would love to see them.
Everybody knows that your save the dates or invitations set the tone for your wedding and is the first glimpse of your big day for your guests. What I have started to notice is that the route you take for choosing these important “pieces of paper” really says a lot about your wedding planning style. Are you the “Creative DIY” bride, the “I can take it on alone” bride or the ”I need help” bride? I honestly haven’t figured out which one I am yet, but I think I might be a bit of each…ok, well maybe not so much the DIY bride, I knew from an early age (actually, kindergarten when I couldn’t color in the lines like everyone else) that I just didn’t have that gene. This is where I have come to my road block in the invitations search.

Do I rebel against that inner child and go DIY, do I spend hours searching the internet for something already made or do I go to a professional and have them create something for me. Each has their pros and cons.

We finally mailed out our invitations. A lot of people have asked me where we professionally got our invitations printed. We actually opted out of using an official vendor and handmade each of them…(even though we did have the help of my good friend and the fiancee’s cousin, who in my opinion is better than most of the professionals out there).
It all started months ago when we first figured out our colors of blue and brown. We then found this wrapping paper at the Container Store:

Finally I’m ready to show off my final invite! To recap, this was a complete DIY project, with the help of a desktop laser printer, and some blank pocketfolds from Cards & Pockets. Back in May, I showed you the outside of the envelope:

Everyone knows the Gocco. Everyone loves the Gocco. Making invitations with a Gocco is the cheapest way for me to do our wedding invitations the way I want to do them. I am half way finished with our wedding invitations (still need to make our response cards). It was simple. And it was cheap. I only need about 115 invitations.

Here is the price break down.

There are a lot of factors to consider when designing and printing your own invitations, but I am determined to do these myself! So far it’s turning out to be a labour of love, spending long hours in front of the MacBook as I work towards the perfect theme. Here is what I would suggest if you want to take on this project yourself:
1. Browse around for inspiration, get an idea of what you would like to present to your guests. For me, I was looking for a neat balance between modern and traditional, and something that would be unique.
