DIY: Cork Board Monogram Signs

April 21st, 2009 by BridalBuds

My supervisor bought cork board for her home office, but then ended up not using it. Because she couldn’t return it and knowing I love DIY projects, she brought it to work and gave me several 12×12 cork boards… I accepted them with delight, but was unsure of how I could use them…

Then, with a little inspiration from Pansy Bud’s awesome DIY flower monogram project, I had an idea. When you enter our venue, there is a short hallway leading to double doors before you get to the main room, so I decided to create something to decorate the double doors. Here a close up on the finished project:

In Search of the Right Reading

April 17th, 2009 by BridalBuds

Calla Lily Dude and I wrote our own ceremony and wanted to keep it short and sweet, so we decided not to have any readings. But then I ran across this essay that resonated with me and the wedding that we are planning, and I just knew that I wanted to have an excerpt from it read at our wedding.

DIY: Make-Up Tips

April 11th, 2009 by BridalBuds

I will probably do my own wedding day make-up as a DIY project, since I enjoy doing my own make-up and it’s an easy way to save money. I usually wear my everyday make-up to look natural and I was happy with the way my DIY make-up turned out in my engagement pictures.

To perfect my wedding day look, I plan on practicing over the next 5 months and taking pictures inside and outside to see what looks best. I also plan on writing down step-by-step what I am doing on these practice runs so that I know exactly how to recreate my perfect look, when I find it.

Educating your Dude

April 8th, 2009 by BridalBuds

This weekend while spending some quality time with a pile of bridal magazines, I learned about a gem of a resource that I just had to share with Calla Lily Dude.

From GroomGroove.com

from GroomGroove.com

GroomGroove.com is a wonderful resource for men, by men. The site covers everything from pre-engagement to life after the honeymoon, and everything in between. They even have videos chock full of useful advice for grooms.

Torture Device or Fabulous Shapewear?

April 3rd, 2009 by BridalBuds

Honestly, I have been avoiding buying shapewear for my wedding day, but I have always thought my wedding dress would look even more fabulous if I was all smoothed out and everything is where it is supposed to be. After all, I don’t want anything sagging, bagging, or dragging on my wedding day!

On a recent trip to the mall, I got talked into trying on some lingerie and shapewear at a Frederick’s of Hollywood. I didn’t find any lingerie that I liked, but I did manage to fall in love with “a torture device” (my not-so-affectionate nickname for the article of shapewear in question)… I am in love with my new waist cincher!

Whose Engagement Ring Tradition is this Anyway?

March 31st, 2009 by BridalBuds

This week, I had an annoying encounter with an acquaintance. When I referred to Calla Lily Dude as “my fiance” she looked down at my left hand and said (with clear pity in her voice) “Oh, no ring?” When I explained that I proposed and that we both wear engagement rings, she smiled politely and said, “That’s so sweet, but it’s not a real engagement ring.”

I tell you, it took all the strength in me not to cause her bodily harm… Some nerve, right? Just because my engagement ring doesn’t follow tradition doesn’t make it any less “real.”

Save the Date Drama

March 30th, 2009 by BridalBuds

I am fond of DIY projects, so I decided to take on designing my own Save the Dates. I had a great idea inspired by Dandelion Bud’s postcards, but the end result didn’t turn out as well as I would have liked:

I printed one out and they looked great at a distant, but even at a comfortable reading distant, you could see the pictures were pixelated and overall quality fuzzy. The poor quality comes from using a less than stellar editing program. Of course, I didn’t notice this at first because I had just spend several hours staring at a computer screen and blamed to fuzziness of that…

The next day, I sent the file to my sister to get her opinion. Was the quality too poor to print? In her brutally honest fashion (which is exactly what I was looking for), I got a resounding “Yes!”

Reasons to NOT Hyphenate Your Name

March 26th, 2009 by BridalBuds

I’ve always had it in my mind to keep my last name if I ever got married, and that plan has never changed. However, when this comes up in conversation, people often ask me if I had ever considered hyphenating my last name as a compromise.

Personally, I think hyphenating is a great option in theory, but there is a dark side to being a hyphenate in practice that people don’t often get to know about… Calla Lily Dude’s last name is hyphenated, and it has caused some minor and major issues in his life so far.

Engagement Picture “Regrets”

March 21st, 2009 by BridalBuds

Although me and Calla Lily Dude don’t consider ourselves to be the most photogenic people in the world, let me start off by saying that I am VERY HAPPY with how our engagement pictures turned out.

But, I do have some “regrets.” By “regrets” I don’t mean “this was a mistake and I wish I had never done it,” I mean more like “I’m very happy, but I wish I had done a few things differently so I could be extremely happy.”

“Regret” #1: Not voicing my thoughts to our photographer

A Breakdown in Communication

March 8th, 2009 by BridalBuds

Any good piece of wedding advice that I have gotten so far has included talking to your partner about wedding-related stuff and making important decisions together. I mean, how hard can it be to talk to each other?

From lifeinbonitasprings.com

I thought I was doing pretty good at keeping the communication lines open between me and Calla Lily Dude even though he doesn’t really want to be involved in wedding planning (by his own admission). For all the talking that Calla Lily Dude and I have done pouring over wedding decisions, I realized that our communication is not as free flowing as I had thought… Here is a prime example:
