Being an avid traveler, I’ve always known that I wanted a destination wedding. The idea of exchanging vows somewhere beautiful and exotic always appealed to me– plus I had heard that it can be cheaper and easier to plan a wedding abroad. So about 5 minutes after we got engaged last July, I started looking for “the right” destination venue for our wedding.

I didn’t realize it would be like trying to find the proverbial needle in a haystack, which is why it took eight ridiculously long months to find the right place and set a date.

One of the last-minute projects I recently tackled was putting together welcome letters for our guests. I have seen some fantastic examples of full-color wedding brochures that could pass for professional work, and some that are full of cute wedding clipart. But, true to Plumeria form, I didn’t have enough time or energy to truly do justice to a full-on brochure, especially given my paltry design skills. We are picking up brochures from the local chamber of commerce, so our guests will have Islamorada info at hand.

Even before I got my wedding dress, I was thinking about what kind of shoes I wanted to wear.

 Our ceremony site
Part of the bonus of having a beach wedding is that you don’t need to do as much decorating as you would at a traditional ceremony site. Plumeria Dude and I will say our vows beneath those two palm trees in the center of the photo– minus the volleyball net, of course!
On our last site visit in November, we did a walk-through with our caterer/planner to figure out where everything will go. She helped us visualize the flow of the event and in turn, we were able to imagine how a few key details could improve an already awesome site.

Though Plumeria Dude and I aren’t having a traditional wedding party, we are having my adorable niece serve as the flower girl. She just turned two, and she is about the most adorable child I have ever laid eyes on.

Too cute, right? At first I considered a very traditional flower girl look. Something like this, or one that could be accented with a hot pink sash.

Once I figured out what type of wedding gowns look awful on me, it wasn’t too long until I learned what flatter my body type.

It turned out that sweetheart necklines worked best for my decolletage– mustn’t hide my light under a bushel. Gowns that nipped in at the waist and were somewhat hip-hugging– to my surprise — also worked well. As a girl with hips, I was always taught to go for full and A-line skirts to disguise my curves, but it turns out that a more fitted silhouette looks better. So I ruled out ballgowns and the poofier of the A-lines.

Some people think that having a theme for a wedding is tacky and juvenile. I’m having one and hopefully my wedding will still come out beautifully. I didn’t think about having a theme at first. But when I started to gather ideas for my wedding, I got so confused and my thoughts and ideas were all over the place. I want too many things and they don’t all go together. So I decided to stick to a theme that fits my venue and location – we’re going nautical.

My last venue post left off in Islamorada, where we visited numerous hotels and resorts (more than I posted about earlier) as well as many private residences. Our caterer, Debbie at Caribbean Catering, was kind enough to show us to a number of vacation homes in the area that could serve as possible wedding locations. That way we wouldn’t have to worry about booking up a resort, overpaying for food/alcohol or freaking out about outrageous site fees. (I am not even going to mention the place that wanted to charge us $12,000 just to host the event.)
After touring at least half a dozen different places, I started to feel like I was Goldilocks. Every place we visited had some kind of deal breaker issue. They were too small for our guest list, or the house was sub par (we are planning to stay on site.) The grounds weren’t well kept. Or it was way out of our price range. One of them was even home to a bunch of wild iguanas. Not cute.
