I am sorry it has been so long since I have written. I have been very very busy with wedding preparations. I wanted to share my latest DIY project with you. I DIY-ed my shoes!! I was looking everywhere for some shoes that I wanted.. I ordered these:

Steve Madden

But the were just too high!

Then I was very upset! I really wanted glitter shoes. I looked at these:

I thought I would Dye these ones pink..

And these

And these

One of my wonderful bridesmaids helped me out and linked me to this wonderful article

I was sold! Glitter my own shoes??!? YES!

Now after some research I found this video-

DIY glitter shoes

which was the best technique for me. I used the Mod Podge instead of the Tacky glue though.

After all this… here are my shoes!

What do you all think??

And obviously, am so excited about them! A friend of mine did a stellar job designing them. She is insanely talented. Now, I have friends/family who read these so I don’t want to put everything out there but here is a little sample of the great work that she has done. My vision was that I wanted it to look like it was hand-painted on there. I want lots of flowers and color—and she did exactly that! Here is a sneak peak:

A sneak peak of our invitations! Aren't they pretty?!

We are working on our enclosure cards now. Once those are done, I will be ordering using cardsandpockets.com, one of the best wedding websites out there. Not only are they inexpensive, the quality is high, the samples ship free, and the customer service is excellent. I emailed their print shop a question over the Thanksgiving holiday and she responded that day! I decided to go the semi-DIY route to save some money. Plus, I’m crafty and have crafty bridesmaids so with some help we can put them all together! I’m so excited to be working with them and can’t wait to see how they turn out! I’ll keep you posted!

I picked a cute little project to ask my best girl’s “Will You Be My Bridesmaid?” and they all said yes! I found some ideas on Pinterest (of course) and found custom cards on Etsy and rolled with it!

I am definitely artistic and I love painting, but when it comes to crafts ehhhh, not so crafty! I was the sister in my sorority that did all the social banners, homecoming banners, greek week banners and literally would not let ANYONE help me because I knew they would mess it up. When it came to big/lil sister stuff, I got by with what I could using the help of puffy paint!

So, I went to Michael’s (OMG that store is so disorganized!) and got all the materials after running around the store 8 times. Morning Glory Bear was ready to kill me! I made little red bridesmaid dresses out of felt, decorated them and hot glued them together into refrigerator magnets! They are red and yellow hopefully like the actual dresses they will be wearing! My little project wasn’t the best but I knew they would appreciate the time I took to put it together.

I had the custom cards made by Practically Perfect Design on Etsy! She was super fast in getting them to me and I loved them so much I forgot to take pictures! D’oh! I was just so excited and it was so hard to contain the little “secret” because no one knew who officially was in my bridal party yet. Once the girls got them, I had them take pictures for me, so here is the final product!

I am so happy they all said yes. Apparently I made a few of them tear up! These are my best girlfriends. The ones that make time for our friendship, the ones that I can trust and talk to about anything and the ones that can say “Hey, you’re being a b*tch! Stop it.” when I am out of line. All I know is, our bridal party is going to ROCK!

The idea is this, you think of, or in my case google “date ideas,” and make a list of all the unique or fun ones. Print them out, you can even do this on fun paper, and then cut the dates out and put all of them in a can. Your guests can then pick a date that they can take their significant other on. What I’m planning on doing as well is giving this as a “wedding gift” to a friend of mine. Don’t worry, I’m not just going to show up with a tin can with paper in it and gift it to her You see, my friend is a big gamer, not in the online gaming kind of way but she is always thinking up fun games for people to play when they come over for dinner so I thought that along with some swag and a gift card for her wedding I would also attach an envelope to a bottle of champagne, which would have a tag of its own that said “Live, Love and be…Bubbly!”, that says the following:

” 12 fun dates for 2012! Reach in when you’re feeling spontaneous. Take a photo of your date for your memory book!”

Naturally, I will also get a fun photo album and stick a tag on it that says “memory book.”

Weddings are about fun and love so I’m hoping this gift will exude both and stand out from the usual envelope of cash…which is also nothing to frown upon

Here’s a photo of what got my creative juices churning.

What fun diy ideas do you have for favors?

I’ll never forget when we decided on “our song.” We have always been huge 80′s music fans and had my ipod in on the “80′s Awesomeness” playlist. We were driving in the car when our dear friend Phil Collins started singing “We Got A Groovy Kind of Love” and we knew instantly that was ours. I’ve been thinking of a neat way to remember our first dance for many years to come and came across these on etsy today.

How cute are they? Honestly, I think I’ll try to make my own. All you would need it to have it printed and placed in a frame. Or you can check it out on etsy too!

None the less, we didn’t know how many kids might attend, and while I was still in my first month of engagement bliss I was spending hours on weddings sites and came across gals who created fun activity books for the mini guests. Since it took me forever to put something together, I wanted to share my version of the kids activity book with you. I hope you find it helpful!

I came across this super cute idea to help spice up the traditional guest book. As a bonus, it seems super easy to make! Here is the idea…have your guests answer questions about you and your hubby. Leave a pen at their plate or have the books set out for all to sign. This is a great way to capture some funny memories that you can look back on for years to come. Simply buy some notebooks with a blank cover, type your questions out, print on some sturdy paper and place on front. Some fun questions would be “where should we go for our ten year anniversary?” or “what should we name our kids?”. You could ask “what is your favorite memory of us?” or “best marriage advice. Go!”. The possibilities are endless and responses can be super fun to read.

I’m a huge fan of making the wedding reception an interactive experience for everyone involved. We have a room in our reception venue that is a lounge type area away from the music and craziness of the main room. This would be a great place to put something like these books! Once I find the time to make them, I will post pictures!

Any other ideas of creative, interactive guest books?

This past weekend, I worked on reupholstering this large makeup/suitcase I got from the flea market. Since inside was pretty yucky, I knew I had to do something with it if I wanted to use it for the cards for my wedding. The vinyl and cloth was coming apart, but the exterior and its functions was still in good shape. Overall, it wasn’t too hard of a task, just a little time consuming. It took me about 4 hours from start to finish.

#3. Cut out poster board to the size of the bottom, sides, and top of the suitcase. Try to make the poster board cut outs as close as you can, but not too tight! Make sure to give a little leeway for the fabric to overlay on top of it. I did a lot of estimating on this part.

Note: If you keep the old interior, you can use that as your measurements instead of measuring or estimating the size of the inside.

#4. Once you have all the poster board cut outs ready, cut out the fabric according to size. I left about 1″ borders. As you can see, it’s not exact. =) You won’t be seeing the back so if the edging is horrible, don’t worry.

#5. Spray one side of the poster board and quickly place the fabric on top of it. Make sure to place the poster board in the middle of the fabric. Also, make sure the fabric is as flat as can be so you don’t have any bumps showing on your suitcase.

#6. Hot Glue Gun the edgings onto the backside of the poster board.

Note: When you get to the edges, it doesn’t have to be perfect. All you need to worry about is to make sure the front is flat. If you have a lot of fabric on the edges, cut some at an angle (picture shown below).

#7. Check if the poster board with the fabric fits into the suitcase nicely. Not too tight nor not too loose.

Note: If you have gaps that are wider then 1/4″, you may need to redo it as it will show later on. On the other hand, if you have a large trim that can cover it up, then you should be fine.

#8. Once all the poster boards with the fabric are placed into the suitcase (do not glue it down to the suitcase yet!), add your trims using a hot glue gun.

#9. Add as much trim as you want. Trimming helps a lot to cover up those icky gaps and spots that aren’t very pretty.

Note: I added trim to the mid section of the sides because that’s where the two poster boards met. I didn’t want to have a line showing so I added the trim to hide it.

Optional #10. If you want to glue down the poster boards with fabric onto the suitcase you can. I didn’t glue down the bottom or top in case I wanted to go back and change the interior. The only parts I did glue down was the sides. If I didn’t glue it down, it would be popping out. It’s all up to you and how snug your poster board fabrics are to the suitcase.

Optional #11. If you’re using the suit case for a wedding, party or decorations, you can add some embellishments just for fun!

And hung them with a sage ribbon that matched similar colors of the leaves and similar surroundings (to create a flawless look). You can also use ribbon that match your color scheme as well, but make sure you use silk, because it created a wonderful contrast to the candlelight at night. Here is a similar type of ribbon I used in several colors:

Obviously, the last thing we wanted was to burn down these gorgeous trees, and the venue we rented didn’t want us putting real candles into the lanterns. So I went onto Oriental Trading Company and found very well priced battery operated tea-lights. They lasted up to 8 hours (perfect time for a typical ceremony/reception). I was also lucky enough to have someone push all 50 little buttons at the bottom before the ceremony started — so make sure you have a good friend around who can help! But these are great – and if the batteries don’t wear out they are good to reuse later.

Unfortunately I don’t have a good picture of what this DIY project looked like. But, to not leave everything to your imagination, here is a picture I found that was similar to what I did…

But I can remember it so vividly in my own mind when I think back to the wedding. I remember looking out towards the ceremony spot during the reception and seeing the trees lit up like magic, it was so cool! Just a special touch to add to your ceremony, reception, rehearsal dinner — because as I said before it’s definitely the little things you remember! Here is one picture I do have…if you look in the trees you can see the lanterns hanging down.

The rest of the centerpieces were also a DIY project…one that was certainly a group effort.

At first, I wanted to use tin cans as vases for flowers – no big enough. So I turned to wine bottles…but after collecting about 30 of them there was one in particular that caught my eye – cobalt blue wine bottles! At the time, I was not yet 21 – so I had to turn to friends and family for some help. I told them of my plan and before I knew it empty wine bottles were being given to me left and right.

small aqua accent vases

I knew I was in trouble when at a family Christmas gathering someone pulled out a jumbo bottle and it was that same beautiful cobalt blue…I had to get my hands of some of those! Lucky for me lots of stores were running sales on such bottles. What’s more, I’m told the wine was not only cheap, but it was good too! Before I knew it I had more jumbo cobalt bottles than I did regular sized. This was due in large part to the fact the Poppy Aunt called me one day saying she had a box for me. Low and behold it contained 20 empty jumbo wine bottles complements of her neighborhood!

This was probably the easiest project I’ve done thus far. All I had to do was soak the bottles and remove labels to turn them into a vase. To create a centerpiece all that was needed was a single tall stem flower – I used silk.

wine bottle vases with silk flowers

Now the question is what to do with all of them after the wedding. The least I could do is recycle them I suppose, but they are so pretty! Maybe wedding guests, especially those that contributed to the “cause” will want to take one home? They could be recycled twice over!

It was important that our wedding really reflect those values. I wanted to find a way to get Poppy Dude really excited about the wedding planning process because I know sometimes the groom just smiles and says “whatever you want, honey!” when it comes to picking and choosing wedding details. I had an idea that fit the ticket for both wishes – a touch of country.

Poppy Dude is a “country boy” when it comes down to it. He was raised on his family’s farm/ranch where three generations of men come together to make the operation a success.

When researching and coming up with ideas for centerpieces – it struck me. What’s yellow and plays a huge part in our agriculturally centered lives? Corn and Wheat. I ran my idea by Poppy Dude and his eyes lit up. We decided to incorporate corn and wheat grown right on the Poppy Dude family farm. Corn would be easy to get – Poppy Dude’s family has some stored in bins on the yard. The wheat on the other hand only presented a certain window of time for cutting at the perfect golden color. That’s usually around the 4th of July here in south-central Nebraska, but because it’s been so wet this year it was a little later – even better for us!

Poppy Dude hand cut the wheat from the field while I bundled it. It then needed to hang to continue to dry.I then sprayed it with a clear coat of matte acrylic spray sealant (to ensure that the seeds don’t shatter out all over the tables – or worse before the wedding) So far they are holding up beautifully! Here’s a look at what we’ve done with our natural resources:

I didn’t want to spend $$ for a candle that, although very symbolic, was only going to be lit for a few minutes. To add to that, I had no idea how to make this project DIY. Numerous times had I looked up ideas online, but nothing really caught my eye. Then the other day when I was writing a post about making my wedding stationary and continuing the same fonts and decorative elements throughout all my wedding items it hit me like a ton of bricks. Use the items that you’ve already picked out because you like them so much! In a matter of seconds I had a design to place on the plain ivory candles I had purchased. Here’s the finished product:

unity candle

details

This was a seriously cheap DIY wedding project – here’s the breakdown.

Ivory pillar candle – $4, on sale for $2

2 ivory taper candles – $0.99 each, on sale for $0.99 for the pair

glass candlestick – $7.99, sale for $3.99

2 glass candlesticks -$5.99 each, on sale for $5.99 for the pair

1 sheet vellum – free, on hand

8 pearl sewing pins – free, on hand

ribbon – free, left over from other wedding projects

That comes to a grand total of $12.97. A purchased unity candle designs costs $20 and up, that’s not including the stands…which can run another $20. Do I even need to do the math? I will anyway…that’s at least a $27.03 savings! And better yet, it matches EVERYTHING I’ve already done!

This was our solution to keeping the cards contained and safe – after hearing a horror story from Poppy Dude’s mom.

Long story short – at a family friends wedding they left the cards out on the table all night to find that someone had stolen them. One of the guests who had purchased a gift card called the store where they purchased it and they caught someone trying to use the card…turns out it was the DJ.

Anyway, Poppy Dudes’ mom was concerned that we have a receptacle and plan for the cards that evening. We didn’t really like the look of a card box (that really didn’t fit with the feel of our wedding). So we opted for a chocolate brown mailbox. Of course I had to DIY something on it. Using our decorative element from our wedding stationary, burlap scrapbook paper, and my soon-to-be last name…tada!

you've got mail!

The plan is for one of the host couples to empty the cards into another box for safekeeping periodically throughout the night, so just in case someone swipes the mailbox, all our cards are not whisked away.

Like the bridesmaid wine bottles…that was fun! So I came across an idea I just might have to try for my second wedding DIY project. I’m not 100% sure I’m going to do it but it’s too cute to pass up!

We have recently met with a few people about invitations (see upcoming post for details about this). Bottom line is I want our invites to be colorful with lots of flowers on them, just like our reception place will be. I found this idea and thought it would be super cute to try.

Floral invite accent (Photo Courtsey of etsy.com)

It can’t be too expensive. Just need to buy some little silk flowers, rhinestones, hot glue gun and some extra invitations to do some test runs. I’ll let you know if I end up trying it. Just might have to!

What do you think?

You might remember me talking about making flowers out of fabric and trims for the wedding party…well they are finally done – and rather impressive if I do say so myself! Let’s start with the smaller projects – the groomsmen’s boutonnieres. I think these will really pop on their khaki suits!

groomsmen bouts

close up

The bridesmaids bouquets took a little more time because, well there are a lot more flowers in each one – nine to be exact! I tucked the tulle in between the flowers for texture. I think the blue tulle adds dimension. These too will pop as the girls are wearing navy taffeta dresses.

bridesmaid bouquet

We can’t forget about the flower girl – after all “flower” is part of her title. She opted to carry a bouquet as well, so we will just sprinkle some petals when we decorate the church. I really had fun with this one using different techniques and fabrics to resemble different flowers. This was sort of a practice run of my own bouquet, only on a smaller scale.

flower girl bouquet

Now all that’s left is my own bouquet and one to toss! and about 35 bouts for family and friends with other various jobs!

It’s a small town traditional church – pews and all. When I mentioned decorating the pews in the church to anyone they ALWAYS mentioned pew bows – not my thing!

pew bow

So what’s my alternative? A DIY project of course! I constructed pew cones out of burlap and accented them with ivory ribbon. Each cone is filled with silk flowers. Because of the blonde colored wood in the church, I chose to use blue flowers over our other color – yellow. Finding natural looking silk flowers proved to me a challenge! I found something that I liked – not sure what kind of flower it is, but I paired it with a dark lavender, and added a couple sprigs of navy tulle for texture.

DIY pew bow

They will line the aisle at the ceremony. I’m attaching them to the pews with mini 3M hooks. This has been one of my favorite DIY wedding projects thus far! I need fourteen total…only 10 more to go!

And I truly enjoyed doing it! I sort of new what I was looking for before I ever started, which in some ways made it easier (like choosing fonts) but in others more difficult (like finding the perfect decorative element). Here’s the finished product…

After doing the invitations I was on a roll, so I continued with the theme of western fonts and the same decorative element and created a whole wedding stationery including response cards, direction/accommodation cards, wrap around address labels, thank you notes, rehearsal invites, reserved tables…the list goes on! (Ceremony programs are still to come)

When it came time to print everything I decided to do my research. At the local print shop I asked them about my paper choices – they could special order the type of paper I wanted (recycled brown kraft paper) and envelopes and do the the printing for $$$. I also asked for a quote if they just did the printing and it came out to $$. I had already looked and priced paper online and knew it was much cheaper that the paper the printer was proposing we use. So being the frugal bride that I am I went ahead and ordered the paper and envelopes online and dropped them off at the printer’s when they arrived. By doing this I saved $200 and got exactly what I was looking for!

I’d love to hear from the Garden…did you DIY your invitations? Are you pleased with the results?

Fully armed with candles, glassware, beads, tulle, ribbon and chair covers that we had borrowed from my cousin because the thought of my guests entering a beautiful hall and seeing ugly metal folding chairs almost made me cry. But the other thought of paying almost $400 for chair covers or $600 to rent chairs also nearly made me cry. So the borrowed covers in a different shade allowed me to rest comfortably.

When we arrived and walked into the hall, you could have mopped me off the floor. Lined up nearly at 150 place settings were beautiful, white, plastic chairs.

After I stopped jumping up and down about chairs, we got straight down to DIY decorating business… DIY=”do it yourself” not “do with an army of completely competent help.” Every time I would start doing something someone would say, “Hey Lilac? What should this look like?”

My advice: have a plan. Divide tasks and assign them to people. Once our friends (specifically the boys) had a single task, they set to it. I ceded some control to my maid of honor who at least could visualize what I was saying (note to all: men don’t visualize well).

Overall the hall looked great:

Just a sample

I love candy!!! Let me just throw that out there. I can live without most desserts (except ice cream), but take away Swedish Fish, Sour Patch Kids-then we’ll have some problems. So wedding cake and the many other decadent desserts that our wedding package includes sound yummy, but I want candy!! So in addition to our ice cream bar that we’re having, we decided to do a candy bar for our guests to enjoy casually through the dessert hour and if we can find a place for it, during most of the wedding.

While our wedding is over a year away, Peachy Mom and I realize that this is a project that isn’t going to just appear overnight so we decided to make this a gradual process. Here is what we’re thinking for our candy bar:

1. All candy will be in our wedding colors. Our colors are pinks, silver and black. We’ve seen some candy bar examples that used retro candy or just the couple’s favorite candy which are also cute ideas for anyone who is thinking of this.

2. The jars should be different sized, but all have some sort of theme so it doesnt look like a table of random jars. This is the main reason why we’re starting early.

3. We need to come up with a cute sign so it doesn’t look just like a table of candy.

4. We need to find the candy!!!!

5. We need to find cute serving pieces and/or find boring ones and make them cute!

It just so happens that Dylan Lauren (as in Ralph’s daughter and the creator of Dylan’s Candy Bar) recently got married and clearly had candy throughout her day. While our candy bar won’t be as elaborate, I’m sure, there is one element that I am particularly in love with and both Peachy Mom and I fully intend on replicating.

LOVE!!!

So fellow buds and readers-does anyone know where I can find an “N” an “E” maybe a “K” and a heart container like this?!

I’ll keep everyone posted as the jars pile up and the candy is chosen, arranged and obviously tasted!

<div class="addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style " addthis:url='http://www.bridalbuds.com/2011/06/first-diy-project/' addthis:title='First DIY Project!!
The finished product (drum roll please)

It’s hard to tell from my iPhone photo, but the white part that would be the diamond is sparkly. Unfortunately I couldn’t take pictures of the actual process since my hands were painted with chocolate. While its a time consuming project because you have to freeze the lollipops after pouring in each color, its definitely a nice personalized touch. It’s also nice that our family and friends have almost come to expect these at all of our parties and look forward to seeing what Peachy Mom has decided to do.

These cute suckers (haha pun) make a super cute favor, a yummy treat for your guests to nibble on and for this party, will be acting as our centerpiece too!

Peachy Mom made the centerpiece too! (Did I mention that Peachy Mom is a a teacher who is super super crafty!) The centerpiece is really a thick piece of Styrofoam covered with toule and toule bows and the hearts were cut out of Peachy Mom’s school’s fancy schmancy stencil machine.

How are your DIY projects going?

This was super simple and something that can easily be done! Here is how created them:

Pick out your favorite wine or wine that you know your gals would like.

Go to the nearest craft store and pick out your favorite wedding themed stickers. Since I had 6 bridesmaids and 1 maid of honor, I had a very difficult time finding stickers in stores. I ended up ordering them online through amazon.com. Just look up “bridesmaid stickers.” They were about $2 each I believe. I also picked out a different one for my MOH.

Print out on some color cardstock of your choice a simple message asking your gals to be a bridesmaid!

Hot glue that cardstock to another piece of cardstock slightly larger to make a nice border.

Hot glue this online the wine bottle over the front label (hint: you may have to remove the label already on the bottle. Nail polish removed and a paper towel work great)

Hot glue the stickers where you want them (I initially just stuck them on there but because of the curve of the bottle, they weren’t sticking. Hot glue works wonders!)

Add some little sparkly gems if you wish to glam it up.

Wrap in a cute bag.

Give to your gals all together and share in this memorable occasion!

Remember me?

*sheepish look*

I’ve just been a little bit busy. And kind of feeling like this:

Is it our honeymoon yet?

I’m finishing up the end of the school year with my students, working on my Masters (and the class this session is super intense), still renovating our new house, and uh… not wedding planning.

We’ve had the house for five weeks now and I just realized that I haven’t done anything in terms of decisions since. Okay, that’s not quite true. We’ve ordered Mr. Magnolia’s wedding band! More on that later. But, I still haven’t talked to my florist. I still need to order ceremony programs. I still have a bunch of DIY stuff to do. And we still haven’t chosen a song. Or made a playlist for dance music. 45 days to go… but somehow none of this is stressing me out… I figure, it’ll get done. Right?

Time sure does fly when you’re NOT planning your very-soon-to-be wedding!

Anyone else fall off the planning boat, only to wake up and realize it’s time to sink or swim?

I got creative and added a lovely DIY wedding dress hanger to my many “custom” items for our wedding.

I loved the decorative hangers that I had seen online and thought, “how hard can it be?” Although this is not the most difficult task I have undertaken (making my veil and boutonnieres were the two most difficult), it also wasn’t the easiest. My hanger turned out pretty:

{Taken on my iPhone}

Lilac Bud’s “Mrs.” Hanger

There are tutorials and instructions online, however I didn’t really use them so there isn’t one that I necessarily recommend.

Materials:

- Cedar hanger (from a pack of 5 purchased at Wal-Mart for under $10)

- Green flexible wire (from my future mother-in-law’s craft supplies)

- White ribbon

- 3 pearl beads (about 4mm)

Tools

- Pliers

- Wirecutters

- Drill

- Hot glue gun

I took the wire and bent it with my hands to form “Mrs.” My new last name is quite long and would be difficult to put in wire writing.

Then, I cut the wire to my desired length (just a little longer than the space between the hanger ends). My future father-in-law drilled a hole, horizontally through each end of the hanger.

I slipped one pearl onto the hanger to form a period and hot glued it in place. I then fed each end of the wire through the holes in the hanger, careful to center my wire writing.

I placed beads on the nub of wire sticking out each side and wrapped the wire around the beads so there would be no pokey ends (i.e. protecting my wedding dress from wire mishaps).

I then finished it off with a white ribbon bow and snapped a photo.

With the other hangers in the pack, I tied blue ribbons to the tops and painted each bridesmaid’s name down the hanger arms.

What are some fun wedding details that you’re making?
