Reasons to Have a First Look…

July 26th, 2012 by

Recently I found this blog that had some really great reasons to have a first look.  I immediately posted it to Violet Dude’s Facebook page and told him he needed to read it.  I have been trying to talk him in to a first look for so long now because I know how important it is to have a quick transition between the ceremony and the wedding, and if we did all our pictures after, it could end up taking two hours.

Some of my favorite reasons from the blog include:

Calming your nerves: I know that I’m not usually the nervous type but Violet Dude definitely is.  He hates public speaking, so even if he will be repeating after the officiant, he’ll still be really nervous to have to do that.  However, it’s our wedding day…emotions will be running high and I’ll be nervous myself and I know that in that moment, I’ll want to be able to see him just as badly as he’ll want to be able to to see me.  Calming your nerves is a great reason for a first look, because it reminds you that it isn’t going to be the end of the world and that it’s better to be excited than nervous when you walk down that aisle!

Getting away from the stress: This is an important one for me, because I’m high-stress in many ways and when it comes down to it…I don’t want my wedding day to be stressful.  With moms, mother-in-laws, bridesmaids, groomsmen, and everyone all trying to make sure that everything is done to my specifications, at some point I’m sure I’ll want to throw up my hands and just say “Do it yourselves!” First look picture time is a great excuse to get away from everyone and go spend time with each other.

Spending time with each other: It’s supposed to be the day all about us…and truthfully, I think it’s silly that most couples only see each other for maybe six or seven hours on their wedding day.  Getting to see each other before the wedding, spending time with each other when it’s just the two of us…it gives us a little time to enjoy the day when it’s just us and no one is trying to get our attention to take pictures or to go say hello to great aunt Betty.  Even at the reception, it’s a lot about saying thank you to everyone and trying to make your rounds at the reception, not about spending time alone basking in the glow of the fact that you’re FINALLY MARRIED!!!

It doesn’t ruin the aisle experience:  Some people say that it’s bad luck to see a bride before the wedding.  Well, neither of us are superstitious, so I’m not really all that worried (bring on the walking under ladders and broken mirrors!) But, I know that one of my major concerns was loosing the “wow” factor as I walked down the aisle.  I’m going to go with a direct quote here, because the way the blogger phrases it is perfect: “But the magic of that moment isn’t lost. You’re about to get married. The moment is HUGE. You walk down single and walk back united with another person. Whether he’s seen you in your dress or not has nothing do do with the magic of the moment. You can see it and feel it, the emotion is still there.” So yes, he knows what I look like…but he also knows that when those doors open up and I walk down the aisle, that he’s about to marry me…and THAT emotion is what is captured in pictures, not the emotion of seeing you in your dress.

So, I think that I’ve finally got him talked into it…somehow.  He knows my reasons, and I think that he understands how important it is for us to be able to spend time alone together before the wedding.  While a first look isn’t the norm, it certainly is becoming more and more popular, and I’m happy about that!

Great post! As a St Louis wedding coordinator I totally agree.
Alone time is a great priority to have.

It also gives you more opportunity for portraits before the ceremony and gets you to your reception faster after the ceremony !

I can’t wait to do the “first look” at my wedding. If you don’t do it, if you wait until you’re walking in to see each other for the first time, it’s always made that moment so impersonal to me. I love the idea of the “big reveal” being just for us, a special moment we get to have alone before our wedding to talk about what’s going to happen, pray together (I don’t know if you’re into that, and I don’t mean to step on your toes or anything if you’re not, just saying we’re gonna do it at ours lol), and have a few precious moments together before things get crazy. Plus, you can get at least 90% of your pictures out of the way, which means a quicker transition between the ceremony and the reception!

Plus, seeing other people’s “first look” pictures always makes me so weepy. I’m gonna be a MESS!

    Great post! :-)
