DIY: Chalkboard Magnet Frames

March 14th, 2011 by

I don’t know about you, but I love it when couples incorporate anything with chalkboards into their weddings.  So I decided to give it a shot and design my own frame chalkboards.  I originally designed it to be used as favors, but we shall see.  I decided to go with all different sizes of wooden frames just to see how it would turn out.  Luckily, each frame was $1 at Michaels each!  Here are the results…

Here’s the final product with my magnet felt corgi’s I made a while back.

I just love this picture of my mom’s brothers and sisters WAY back in the day.  This picture frame was 5″X6″.  Only drawback to this one is that there’s not backing.  I ended up taping the picture to the back of it.
This one was pretty big.  It also has dowels so you can post it up as well.  This picture frame was 6.5’X8.5″.
This one was my favorite one.  It had a backing to it so you don’t have to tape the picture to the back.  It also has a wooden dowel so you can place it up right.  Plus it’s a perfect size for favors.  This one measures to 4.5″X4.5″

Directions on How to Make Chalkboard Magnet Frames:

Supplies Needed…
Chalkboard Krylon Spray Paint: $5.00
Any wooden picture frames.  The dolphin design didn’t even come out.  So you can even have a design and the spray paint should cover it after 2 layers.
Strip of magnets.

1. Spray the frames.  I did 3 layers.  After I sprayed each layer, I waited about 5 minutes in between to let it dry a little bit.  Use news paper to cover underneath the frames.  Then let it dry overnight.

2. Cut about 1″ of the magnet tape, peel, and stick.

3. Put your picture in it, hang it, frame, and draw a pretty picture on it!
Options: You can either post it up like a normal picture frame or put it on your refrigerator!

$$ Cost Breakdown $$

Frames: Each were $1

Krylon Spray Paint: $7.50

Roll of Strip Magnets: $2.00
Chalk: $2 for a pack of 24 @ Joanns
Make sure if you go to Michael’s print a 40% of 50% off coupon!!!  If you don’t know how to do that, just ask me.

Ooh, that is neat! You did a great job!
How are you incorporating the chalkboards into the wedding? Menus?

So cute! These might also be a good kid’s table project. I was going to get crayons and coloring books to keep our child guests occupied, but painting the frames and then giving them chalk to go to down on, would be a great way to keep them from getting cranky.

@ Orchid Bud: What a great idea for the kiddos! Didn’t think of that.

@Magnolia Bud: I just decided to make it for fun. I was originally thinking the idea would be for wedding favors. I would use the frame with the cute little corgi in it. =) It’s a nice small portable size.
