Our Wedding Rocks

January 12th, 2011 by

This post is literally about rocks. A whole box of rocks, to be exact. You see, I stumbled upon something that Dahlia Dude and I are definitely using at our wedding, and I was so freaking excited that I immediately had to come and gush to all of you about it! And yes, it has to do with rocks.

I’m talking about a Rock Ceremony. It’s similar to the Sand Ceremony you’ll see at weddings, and is a symbol of unity. But the Rock Ceremony takes it a step further than the Sand Ceremony, and when I mentioned it to Dahlia Dude, we decided we had to have it. So what’s a Rock Ceremony, you ask? Well…

At the beginning of our ceremony, every guest will get a smooth, polished, river rock and a pen. As our ceremony starts, our officiant will say something along these lines:

Before you met, your lives were on different paths with different destinations. But love has brought you together and joined these separate paths into one. Each one of your friends and family here today have been given a small, polished stone that represents their unique individuality and their presence at your wedding today. You also each have a stone of your own that symbolizes your previous separate lives, separate sets of friends, separate families, and the different life’s journeys you once traveled.

I will now ask that everyone please take out the stone you have been given and pause to make a wish or blessing for happiness and good will for the couple for the future of their marriage.

Then our officiant will ask our guests to write a short sentiment on one side, and sign their name on the other with the pen they are given. We’ll collect them, and will display them in a glass vase after the wedding. Isn’t that the greatest thing you’ve ever heard??

*Dies*

Alright, I might be a little biased, but I’m super excited for this!! Since our destination wedding is going to be super small, and I’ve never been a fan of the traditional guestbook (seriously, I would have no idea what to do with it!!) this is the perfect solution for us!!!! And I think it will be so cute for Dahlia Dude and I to take the rocks out one by one and read them to each other after everyone leaves. I mean, really? How romantic is that?

So are you guys having a unity ceremony? If so, what are you having? Sand? Handfasting? Rock? If not, why? Or are you still deciding?

What a great idea! I really like this too. Orchid Boy and I are doing a sand ceremony. He grew up on the North Shore of LI and I grew up on the South, so we’re going to unite sand from the north and south shore, and if I can get my hands on it, some from the OBX to represent our new life together in NC.

That is a very cute idea! We are doing the sand unity ceremony. I love the part of the ceremony where it talks about how the grains of sand can never be separated once united and then relating that to your marriage.
But the Rocks are a great way to do that, eliminate the guest book that gets dusty on your book shelf anyway, and makes your family/friends feel like they truly are part of your special day.

And you can put the rocks in the garden to turn up now & again! What a lovely idea.
