The Big 5 – Part 3 |

CAKE – Of course we’re having a wedding cake. CC’s favorite dessert is yellow cake with chocolate frosting, so it was a no brainer that there would be cake at our reception. But, it’s not all about the groom – I’m the bride! (Jeez, that sounded a bit bridezilla, heehee.) As much as I like yellow cake with chocolate frosting, I’ve eaten a lifetime’s worth in the last 6 months, since I’ve moved in with CC (I seem to bake one every other week for him.). I definitely didn’t want that to be our only wedding cake.

I ♥ carrot cake with cream cheese frosting… yum. I’ve also been really into baking lately, so I figured baking our own wedding cakes, and having a variety of them, would be a great way to save money and make it interesting. Not everyone thought it was such a great idea, however. I would have a lot going on that last week before the wedding, which may have helped my mentor and his wife decide to kindly offer to gift us our wedding cakes. Of course we said yes, one less thing for us to have to worry about! My mentor already had a baker in mind. He teaches with a talented man, Peter Dumont, who is going to create 3 wonderful cakes for our wedding.
So, let’s see the cakes! I don’t know what they’re going to look like, exactly. It’s a bit of a surprise. I know one will be yellow with chocolate frosting (of course!), one will be carrot with cream cheese frosting and the 3rd, a surprise. Indeed, I am one of those brides who can let “big details” go and trust that the vision of the artist (or baker) will be fabulous.
Here are some of the inspirations I shared with my mentor and baker. I definitely like simple design and want monochromatic frosting because we’re going to have 3 different colored frostings, afterall, so I didn’t want it to look too busy.

Are you baking your own cake? Are you having a cake at all, maybe going a less traditional route with cupcakes or a dessert bar? What was your cake choosing experience like?

I love to bake too…and the thought of baking our own cupcakes…did cross my mind. But now…two days before our wedding… I am soooo glad I did not.
We decided to do with a small 6 inch cake for cutting and then we are doing 3 flavors of cupcakes.
I think you made a smart decision to delegate the cakes out.
