Dealing with Diets

July 21st, 2010 by

On the Lilac Guest list are individuals with dietary needs that at first I was extremely worried about meeting all of them. What kind of a menu would we have if we catered all of these known food issues:

Seafood Allergy

Peanut Allergy

Celiac (Gluten-Free)

Diabetes

Lactose intolerance

Vegan

As ungracious as this sounds the only dietary need we will be catering to is the seafood allergy (because no one wants to send the bride to the ER!). We have enough stresses to deal with in putting together a menu and choosing food that we can’t focus on each known need, no less try to fit everyone’s tastes.

Guests with dietary needs know that they cannot expect an entire event to fit around their personal needs. Not surprisingly though, given the list above a single buffet can feed all special diets at least one to two items.

Now that I’ve established my stance on food… we should probably get on top of a place to eat it!

Do/did you feel pressured to work with every diet on your guest list?

I don’t think brides should be pressured to work with dietary restrictions and guests should not expect brides to do so.

We just tried to offer a wide variety of items to appeal to all people – fruits, veggies, red meat, chicken, seafood, etc….

Wow, this is a tough one! Dietary restrictions can be very challenging, especially when you think of your guests, determine the menu and try to please everyone. I decided 18 months ago, that I wouldn’t be able to please everyone. However, I do applaud your efforts in making it work.

My wedding will have a lactose free option & a regular food option. Since I am gluten free I talked to the caterer about my personal needs as a bride, and they will serve my meal separate. A lot of caterers seem to be workable. I agree with picking one food allergy to cater to, and the rest, well they can eat before or after if they aren’t happy. You cannot please everyone! It’s not possible.
