Wedding Cake Be Damned! |

I have a confession to make… those beautiful cakes featured on TheKnot.com, Ace of Cakes, and the like…do nothing for us…Being that wedding cakes are expensive and generally covered in Fondant, also known as disgusting paste (to us), we were happy to “drop the cake” as it were...
We went into our first catering meeting with two thought bubbles… his was Tiramisu and mine was the song of the south known as Bread Pudding. Wouldn’t you know it- both were on their menu. In fact, both were on their menu and were included in the quoted price per guest. Eureka! But who would win? The Bride or the Groom?!?! We looked at each other and then back at the caterer…. “Can we have both?” we asked almost in unison. Ask and ye shall receive….
and
Deserts, which were at the bottom of our mutual excitement list, have now climbed to a ranked position! Are you going the traditional wedding cake route or are you doing something else?

Cherry Bud, it’s so funny to read your post, because the cake for us was a disaster situation – I do agree with you that they are so expensive and can become a headache. We did end up going with a cake though, just because I found a really cute local baker who gave us a great price and ended up creating a simple cake. I applaud you though for doing what you want and going with desserts – and two delicious ones at that!

We completely agree with you. We’re pie people so that’s what we’re going with. Much cheaper!

More and more brides and grooms are opting for alternatives to wedding cake. One of my couples opted for a heavenly chocolate mousse that made their guests forget all about cake after the first bite. One of my more recent couples chose to have cookies and milk (champagne glasses and all) playing up the groom’s absolute love of cookies. As with anything wedding related, the couple must decide how important it is and does it truly represent them!

If I was attending your wedding, I would have the bread pudding…yum!

My husband’s favorite dessert is bread pudding, and our caterer made a DELICIOUS version of it. We did also have a more traditional wedding cake (no fondant though – ick!), but instead of groom’s cake, we had bread pudding! Yum.
