No More Pachelbel

April 30th, 2010 by

I have one qualm regarding advice given by older family and friends. They all seem to love Pachelbel’s Cannon in D. When I told my fiance how upset I was about the sheer mention of the word Pachelbel, he looked at me quizzically. So I explained that in school I played the Cello, which although the sound is rich and beautiful, is not the best instrument for a smaller than average 8 year old girl to play. I literally had to carry my Cello on a luggage pull cart. Which resembled this:

Cello

But this wasn’t the worst part of playing the Cello in 4th-10th grades… oh no, it was not. The worst part of playing Cello was Pachelbel’s Cannon in D. Any Cellists will appreciate this You Tube clip which summarizes all the reasons I cannot have this played at our wedding…

Are you and yours using non-traditional ceremony music? Any particular style you like best?

Like you, I also played the cello when I was younger – and like you, I also hated that part! Thanks for sharing that video – it was hilarious!

We are using a very broad mix of music. Our processional consists of music such as Cirque de Soleil and the Beatles.

If you’re interested in classical music with a twist, you should check out Bond (the musical group, not the international super spy!) It’s a string quartet with a twist. In fact, we’re even using their song Lullaby in our ceremony, which is an updated version of Cannon in D.

Rachel, the cello is amazing but yes Cannon in D is so bothersome!! I love that you’re doing an amazing mixture of songs. We’re using mostly alternative rock, but that’s a post yet to come! :o )
