Mapping It Out – The Seating Chart

April 20th, 2010 by

I used to think that assigned seating at reception was more work than it’s worth and reminded me too much of school.

But now I’ve changed my mind.

I went to a couple of weddings without assigned tables.  Lilac Dude and I were filming a wedding and observed that people were trying to add chairs to tables and some guests were sitting alone. It seemed a little chaotic and frustrating.

Some other reasons that I’ll be picking the tables for my guests include:

1. Difficult family members. We all have them and I don’t want our sitting alone.

2. Getting up and losing your seat. It’s always nice to know you’ll have a chair waiting for you if you make a restroom run or need a dancing break.

3. The people you don’t know. Those far removed family members that we don’t exactly recognize. Table arrangements can give “context clues” as to who those strangers are at your wedding.

Are you assigning tables or seats?

There will be no “strangers” at our wedding. 50 people are on the list.

I’m in the same boat, I didn’t want to do this originally but then I thought about all the things you bring up and realized I can’t NOT do it! :o) Great schematic by the way.

We aren’t doing seating charts, but we are getting placecard holders and lining them up so everyone can grab one and put it in front of where they choose to sit. Also, it doubles as a great “thank you for coming” gift for everyone! They can be reused as photo holders at home!

Hi the wedding table plan shown above is indeed my design and photo. It should be courtesy of, as the blogger who lifted this image doesn’t own it. If you’d please change the wording for me, that would be very kind!
