When to Send Save the Date?

January 7th, 2010 by

As I mentioned in a previous post, our cute Save the Date cards are now ready & printed.  Since we’re not getting married until September 25th of this year (yay, finally I can say that!), I’m thinking I need to wait a while to send the cards out.  I’ve been reading a lot of wedding etiquette books, and most say that STDs should be sent out 4-6 months prior to the wedding date. Right now, we’re at 9 months. Is it too early?

I’m not sure if you read the blog Wedding Aces, but there was a post recently about save the dates:

She suggests sending them out at the 12 month mark, and definitely before the 6 month mark, but I agree with you that some places say 4-6 month.

We sent ours at 6 months. We wanted people to have time to plan for the wedding, but not send it so far in advance that they forget about it by the time the wedding rolls around.

    I hope this is helpful!

    Hey Gardenia!
We also had some issues with this. Everyone says something different. Since we are doing a destination I read we should get them out a year in advance. That seemed very early to me so we held off. We did save the dates 9 months out, but that was only because we wanted people to be able to go ahead and starting planning their trip since flights and hotels were involved. If we would have been local then I probably would have waited and done 6 months.
    Good luck!

We’re getting married in November of 2010. I sent ours out in October 2009 because ALL of my family will have to travel and a lot of our must-have guests are civil servants who pick their vacation for the year in November. I also figured that, given the current economy, the more time people had to plan a budget for flights, hotels and whatnot, the more likely they’d actually come.

I would say the Save the Date reminder send outs depend on where you are in relation to where your guests are coming from and the financial situation of your guests (if you know it well enough)

I live in Hawaii and my family is scattered on the mainland US (some as far as the north east). Airfare is pricey to say the least. I was looking the other day and saw fares around $800per person.

My Save the Dates are going out 12 months in advance to allow ample time for my family and guests to attend.

Use your best judgement based on all the important stuff: Who, What, Where etc.
