Veil Questions |

I’ve now been to look at wedding dresses a couple times and each time, I’ve become increasingly more confused about the use of veils. So, I’ve been trying to do a little research online and here are some tips I’ve found. Personally, some of these tips seem a bit bogus, so I wanted to get feedback from the BridalBuds community.
- Always consider the detailing of your dress. The veil should accentuate and be proportional to the dress, not take away from its details. Your veil length should be cut just above or below any focal point on your dress. For example, don’t choose a veil that ends right where your bodice begins. This will visually cut you in half. If you have a sharply defined waistline, don’t choose a veil that ends right at the waistline.
- A cathedral length veil should only be worn with a chapel or cathedral length gown.
- If you are shorter than 5’4″ you should select an elbow-length veil (30” long). If you are taller than 5’7″ you should select a fingertip-length veil (36” long). If you are in between these heights, you could go with either length depending on your personal taste.
- Choose a simple veil and headpiece if your dress is very ornate.

How did you select your veil? Any tips for a bride-to-be selecting a veil? Finally – where can I find a veil that is less than $300?!?!?

$300?! That seems way too much! Have you thought about making it yourself or having it made by a crafty friend? If you arent wanting something too complicated, this option could be a money saver. Here is an article on DIY instructions on making a veil: http://www.do-it-yourself-weddings.com/making-a-bridal-veil.html
Good luck!

Very interesting post! Usually boutiques provide with a discount when you purchase the gown and accesories on the same location. I would certainly shop around… Good luck!

Target has veils for under $10. They aren’t in stores, but you can find them on the website.

Hey Gardenia Bud! I actually read this exact thing about a month ago and was just as confused! I will say that I did try on a few with different dresses and found that I agree with the point of not having your veil end at a focal point of the dress. An example was a drop waist gown I tried on with a fingertip veil. The veil came to the exact point the drop waist ended and I definitely felt a little cut off, almost like there wasn’t a good flow to the dress.
As for finding one for a good price, have you tried any sellers on Etsy? I found this great one who is reasonably affordable!

You could also check into whoever is doing your alterations (a bridal store, or a separate alterations shop). I’ve heard of seamstresses who will create a custom veil for you (usually at reasonable prices).

I bought mine on e-bay. I got it from seller “cutebrides” and it was only $19.99. Why pay over a hundred dollars for something you will wear for only a few hours! It was beautiful, and held up great. I got tons of compliments on it.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts/suggestions. I’ll look into all these options and get back to you once I’ve made my final decision!

I do know it can be hard to find just the right veil! But it is worth the time to find one that you like for your special day. For those of you in the Southern California area, I would like to let you know their will be a bridal show on March 28, 2010 at the Irvine Marriott Hotel with a featured Veil Designer . And the selection is amazing! Check it out I know they are working on a website to be posted in the near future.
I will post it when it is up and running! Good luck and Happy New Year!
