Engagement Photos: Are They Important?

December 11th, 2009 by

After Iris Dude and I got engaged, one of the first things that showed up on our “to-do” lists was to have engagement pictures taken. We debated with each other – was this really important?

In the end, we decided it was worth it, and I’m so glad we did. I love the pictures we had taken!

Here are the reasons why I feel they’re important:

  1. It gets you used to being in front of a camera. This way, you’ll be more comfortable on your wedding day when a photographer is following you around. That’s no time to be camera shy!
  2. It gets you used to public displays of affection – in front of a camera. We’re always told that acting cutsie and lovie in front of people is not acceptable. However, your wedding day is one of the only days in your life that people will put up with you kissing and snuggling in public. Get used to it while taking some pictures of you both!
  3. Start bonding with your wedding photographer. It lets them learn more about who you are as a couple, and lets you learn more about them and their personality.
  4. You’ll have lots of opportunities to use the pictures. Engagement announcements, wedding website, “Save the Dates”, new Facebook profile picture – the opportunities are endless!
  5. You never look more beautiful than you do when you’re in love. Take advantage of it!

We are so pleased with how our pictures turned out! This is the one we used for our Save the Dates:

Our pictures were done by Lora Edwards Photography.  For anyone in North Carolina (especially the Triangle area), give her a call – she does a great job, her prices are very reasonable, and she’s great to work with!

I agree with you 100%. Our engagement pictures turned out great too. And we had so much fun going through the process together.

Agreed!! I also think on top of getting used to getting used to the camera, it also gives you an opportunity to see what your good angles are! :D I love the photo that you chose for the save-the-date!

I totally agree! We wanted to do our engagement session in warmer weather, but we’re getting married in May so we were thinking about doing a day after session instead. But after thinking about all the advantages of an engagement session, we decided against it and scheduled an engagement session a month before the wedding.

I think they’re great, but for me they fall under the “Nice” not “Necessary” category (sorry to be the lone dissenter!) We are having a destination wedding, so naturally we aren’t doing an engagement shoot with our wedding photographer since she is hundreds of miles away.

In some ways I am sad, but other ways relieved. It’s also a savings issue– I negotiated down the price of our wedding photographer by a significant amount since we weren’t doing an engagement session. If there are other brides out there who are super cost conscious, I think this is one area you can cut without adversely affecting the overall look and feel of your wedding day. OR, do what we do and just be really snap-happy with our own cameras!

I love your shots though, no doubt about that!
