Making a Mountain Out of a Molehill

November 25th, 2009 by

Now that Iris Dude and I have officially passed the 6 month mark to the wedding, I’m starting to get a little nervous.  There’s still so much left to be done – will we really be able to get it all done in time?

Specifically, anytime anything goes at all wrong in my life, I immediately start to freak out about the wedding.  Suddenly, I’m able to turn anything into an imagined wedding disaster!

For instance, I’m about 75% sure that I broke my toe tonight.  (I was trying to kick a toy for my dog, and I accidentally kicked the door jam instead – and I was not wearing shoes.  Now, my toe is bent at an odd angle, and I’m in massive amounts of pain anytime I move.)  After the pain started to subside a bit (after a LONG time), the wedding panics started.  Will I still be able to wear the adorable shoes I picked out to go with my dress??  Am I going to walk with a limp now, which will keep me from walking down the stairs into the ceremony??  Am I going to have huge medical bills that will keep me from being able to add another food station to the reception, as I had intended??

Are they rational thoughts?  No, not at all.  And even though I realize that, I still can’t quite make them stop!

Does this happen to anyone else?  Anyone have any good advice for silencing these crazy thoughts?

Yes and, actually, a broken toe isn’t going to cost you a whole heck of a lot. The doctor is going to tape it to the adjacent toe and give you pain killers. Might as well do it yourself. Your toe will heal in time for the big day. You will be able to do everything as planned, just take it easy and don’t cause yourself too much pain. When I start to feel panicky and the voices start I look at my calendar and planner. It all goes away and I’m excited again. Also, I’ve broken my toe and it healed in about 6 weeks. Yeah, it hurt for a while and wearing shoes was a pain. All is well now.

I used to break my toes all the time in gymnastics. Heather is correct in that the doctor will just tape the broken toe to the one next to it. It’ll heal in no time.

And not to totally scare you, but just in case your toe nail falls off, that is totally fixable too. Just get the fake stick on toe nails for your nail-less toe and no one will know the difference!

Oh, yes. I am familiar with this brand of anxiety. When almost all my coworkers came down with strep throat this week I couldn’t stop thinking: WHAT IF I AM SICK ON MY WEDDING DAY! (which is also 6 months away!). Silencing those worries is no easy task. I recently blogged here a long list of “what if” worries that plague me. The answer? Still trying to work it out. I am just trying to hold on to what’s important: marrying the man I adore with all my heart. — Snapdragon Bud
