Bridal Portraits With Your Pets?

November 11th, 2009 by Iris Bud

I’d like to introduce you to one of the most important people in my life:

Iris Bud and Lucy

Iris Bud and Lucy

This is Lucy, our 1 1/2 year old beagle/yellow lab mix. (Now, I know some of you might be confused that I referred to her as “people” when she is clearly a dog. However, if you have a dog, you probably understand.) This picture was taken the night of our engagement, showing off the adorable puppy and the new bling.

Here is my conundrum. At some point, I do want “bridal portraits” taken. However, I really want Lucy in these pictures at some point. I would love to have some pictures with her while I’m in my wedding dress – I just think that would be adorable! So, I’m trying to figure out the best way to make this work. Here are some of the ideas I’m considering:

1) Take bridal portraits at the “traditional” time in advance of the wedding, and have Lucy in some of the pictures. (Some of my concerns – I’m afraid Lucy will get the dress dirty or rip it (since she is a bit hyper) and Iris Dude won’t be able to be there to keep her calm, since he can’t see me in my dress!)

2) Have Lucy at the wedding, so we can take some pictures with her after the ceremony (I’m not sure what we would do with her for the rest of the wedding – I’m concerned she’d get bored if we just put her in a room somewhere, and we can’t just let her run around)

3) After the wedding (2 or 3 weeks after, I’m thinking) have a “post wedding photo shoot” with Iris Dude and Lucy (a trash-the-dress where we won’t actually trash the dress, if you will)

Know that I won’t be using these pictures for any specific purpose, so they don’t have to be done at any specific time (we won’t be doing announcements, and I don’t want any kind of picture at the wedding or anything) so I’m not too concerned about the timing; just trying to decide what will be best/easiest in the long run. So, what do you think?

I had a dog involvement issue also (http://www.bridalbuds.com/2009/06/flower-girl-or-flower-dog/) and our solution was to take some photos with her…which leads me to your post…

I decided to take some photos with her before we departed for the ceremony. Because of the ceremony location in proximity to our house, bringing her to the wedding wasn’t an option.
Everything worked out well – we were able to snap some group family shots with her, and also shots of just her and I alone.

However, depending on your dog’s personailty, I think your idea of taking pictures at a later date is a great idea. I found on the morning of, Bella was very shy and really not acting herself because there was SO much going on in the house and so many unfamiliar faces.
If your dog is the same, having a nice quiet and personal shoot may be just the thing!

I vote for # 3. It is the safest way to go. Great idea!

I also think that having some pictures after the wedding with your dog is a great idea.

Thanks for the input guys!! I think option 3 is the winner.

The photographer who did our engagement pictures is gonna do a shoot with us after the wedding sometime. I think we’re gonna go wonder around Raleigh – we should get some interesting looks, walking our dog downtown in a wedding dress and tuxedo :)
