So You Think You Can Dance?

August 21st, 2009 by

Wow, it’s amazing how time can slip by.  I know I’ve been MIA, and I apologize for that.  It seems that the period between 60 and 30 days before the wedding have been this weird limbo where I felt like I had a lot that needed to be done, but for one reason or another, they could not be done yet.  But now, we’re only 37 days away and the wedding is coming up fast!  I’ll try to share as much as I can about this last month of our journey toward the wedding.

Lotus Dude and I decided to take advantage of this little lull and sign up for some dance classes.  We hadn’t planned on doing this because we did not want a choreographed first dance.  The last thing either of us wants to be doing the evening of the wedding reception is struggling to remember dance steps.  But I then realized that there are lessons out there where you can just learn basic dance steps and how to lead and follow.  This seemed like a good compromise.  We wouldn’t have to worry about remembering choreography, but we also wouldn’t be stuck just swaying on the dance floor in front of a hundred people.

We chose to go with the Dance Factory in Arlington, VA as it is very close to our house.  We signed up for a series of 5 private lessons, and we have finished 3 out of the 5.  I was a little nervous before the first class, but our instructor is great.  She listened to our first dance song (“Maybe I’m Amazed” by Paul McCartney) and suggested a Rhumba.  She has taught us the basic step and a few variations.  She also gave us a choreographed beginning and end, but the middle is just improvised Rhumba.  She’s had some great tips about performance and facial expressions.  Even if you’re not taking classes, I would definitely recommend practicing with your shoes and a long skirt or dress.  I’ve been taking those to the class and it definitely makes a difference.   We’ve been loving it so far, and are even talking about joining a group class after the wedding!

This is all very good advice. So many couples are faced with a big Duh? when it comes to the first dance. Practice makes perfect and it will give the couple another way to stay connected
