Registry Fun: Tips on building a great bridal registry

I put a lot of thought into where I wanted to register.
Unfortunately, when I began to research registry options I found that there are far fewer stores to register within Canada than there are in the U.S.
Stores like Crate & Barrel and Pottery Barn are few and far between here, so most couples turn to 2 familiar department stores: The Bay or Sears (we used to have WalMart as well, but they discontinued their registry service here this year).

There is nothing wrong with these stores, but I have found through my own experiences shopping for other people’s registries that most times the stock is very limited, the consultants are nowhere to be found, or the employees have no idea where to find the item I am looking for.

Then last year, in the midst of me trying to decide where to register, a new store rolled into town…

That store: Bed Bath & Beyond.
BB&B has been around in the U.S. for many years, but is a newcomer to the Canadian retail market. Lucky for me one opened up nearby and I couldn’t be more happy with my decision to register with them.

I love using their online registry feature to add stuff from any computer and any guests that have bought something off my registry have all given me positive feedback about their great experiences shopping at BB&B, both in-store and online - hooray!

Recently I was exploring their website and I came across an article about tips and suggestions on registering that I thought would be helpful to share with those of you who have yet to register. These tips can apply to any registry at any store:

Be Study Buddies: Before you set foot in a store, do your research – through catalogs, the internet and word-of-mouth.

Look Back…: You’ll be surprised how many of your sentences begin with “When I was growing up…” or “My mom did it this way…” Discuss your background and personal preferences beforehand.

…And Think Ahead: What are your lifestyle goals? You may be in a small apartment now, but is there a house in your near future? Will you entertain often? How much will you be cooking?

Choose a Prime Time: When selecting a day to create a registry remember that weekdays are a preferred time to go. More stores have a dedicated bridal consultant during the weekday and you can avoid the weekend crowds.

Ask An Expert: Schedule time with a consultant. Most stores have a registry specialist on staff specifically devoted to the needs and concerns of engaged couples. Their expertise and guidance are invaluable, and they should be able to answer any questions you might have. Plus. since they work with engaged couples on a daily basis, they have the inside scoop on the latest registry trends.

Think Twice…Or More: Experts advise you to register for 2-3 items times the number of guests you plan to have. Close friends and family will rely on your registry for special events leading up to the wedding – such as engagement parties, bridal showers, and holidays – so you should definitely stock up!

It’s Easy As ABC: If you are having a small reception, treat your registry like your guest list: create “A” and “B” categories. Start with staples and as they are purchased, add the less-crucial items.

Run the Gamut: Try and satisfy all budgets with a healthy mix of high and low-end items, and plenty in between.

Think Timeless, Not Trendy: You love that bold china pattern, but will you feel the same in 30 years? Is it something you want to pass on to your granddaughter?

Tomorrow is Another Day: Don’t feel pressure to make a decision all at once. You can always update and modify your registry at any time.

Registering with Orchid Dude was such a fun experience. We did some research ahead of time to determine our likes for items such as our place settings, colour schemes, designs, etc. so that when we went in to register there were no surprises and we knew exactly what we were looking for.
