Cake(s): Part 1

The wedding cake was very hard for me to decide on.  I had actually written blogs about cake searching and ended up not posting them because I still wasn’t keen on having a plain wedding cake and groom’s cake.  I originally wanted a famous little diner in my hometown to make pies.   I wanted to design a Pie Stand out of thick barbed wire that held three or four different size pies and tier it like a cake.  I had it all planned out and was going to have my Dad help me build it.  But everyone I talked to (mostly my mom) convinced me that I would regret not having a cake.  Plus the Dude’s favorite dessert is cake.

If you weren’t aware, the Dude is from Texas, and I am from California.  In the South, it is tradition to have a Groom’s Cake.  A groom’s cake can come in all different shapes, sizes, colors and flavors.  Most of them I’ve seen are chocolate or fruit filled usually depicting something of importance to the groom like his favorite sports team, hobby, family crest, or alma mater.  Even though the Dude is from the South, I was going to let him bring it up if he wanted one, I wasn’t making any suggestions.  I didn’t want one of these next to the wedding cake…

A Traditional Groom's Cake

Then one night about 6 months into planning, I mentioned how I would like chocolate as one of the flavors on our wedding cake.  And he said without any hesitation, “Well, the groom’s cake will be chocolate”.  He loves chocolate cake and I knew if he was going to have a groom’s cake, it would be chocolate.  I said, “I didn’t know you wanted a groom’s cake, and I wish you would have told me earlier because now we have two cakes to decide on”.

After our conversation I researched groom’s cakes online.  They were all pretty average, and I didn’t want just a normal cake.  I then remembered my friend having half chocolate, half vanilla frosting on her cake, split down the middle.  I didn’t know all the details because I wasn’t there, but that could easily cover a groom’s cake in my opinion.  The longer I thought about it, the more ideas came into my head.  I knew I wanted traditional white cake on my side like this…but what was his side going to look like?

wedding wedding planning wedding cake archived , gal cake22 lSome of his favorite things are Rockets Basketball, Technology, Austin, Camping, Hiking, Kayaking, Beer…Outdoors!  Which sent me to think of wood.  When I researched wood grain cakes, I found this was pretty popular.  Although the only one I liked was by Martha (of course!!).

When I took my idea to Tasteful Cakes, they sketched up exactly what I had envisioned!  We tried a few flavors and decided on the two that would represent each side of our cake.

I will reveal our cake and flavor choices to you in a few weeks when we get the photos back from the photographer!!

    Plumeria Dude decided on key lime pie tartlets instead of a groom’s cake. They were so tasty!
