Let Them Eat Cake…for Less $ |

One cost I am trying to keep under control for my wedding is my cake. Typically with bakers in my area, a 3 tiered cake will serve about 150 guests and cost between $550-$750. To serve my 200 guests I would be looking at a cake close to $1,000.
At first I was determined to make my own wedding cake. But then I came back to reality and realized it would be way too much for me to take on before my wedding. I love to be hands on with everything weddings, but sometimes I have to step back and realize that I’m not planning a wedding for a client, and that there is a lot more to focus on when its your own wedding.
So I thought instead of worrying about baking and then decorating the perfect cake, I would instead take inspiration from the cakes I see set up at the bridal shows: for display purposes they create fake cakes out of styrofoam and fondant.

My Inspiration
I have 2 options I could attempt for my fake cake – have it fully fake or have 1 tier be real for cutting.
I’ve decided to go fully fake to make things as simple as possible.
With the help of an awesome vendor friend of mine I have been given all the tools and tricks to make my trial successful.
It will be very similar to the picture above, but instead of the white coral looking thing on top I will be adding a bunch of my black magic roses.
We will be having the cake we serve to our guests made by a professional, but it will be a simple slab cake in the back that nobody will ever see so I’ve been able to save some big bucks – the cost to serve my 200 guests is only $300.00!
I will have to chronical my steps so that if it turns out successfully I can share it with you as a DIY project.

What a great idea! Im running into the same problem, and not too excited about spending 1000 on 200 folks

I find that many cake vendors will not make it readily known that they can do a fully or semi-fake cake as a wedding option, because it of course means that they will not be making as much profit.
But all you have to do is ask, and they all usually have pricing available and can discuss this option with you. Most would rather have you as happy client by helping you with options for an affordable cake, then not have you as a client at all.
I also find that if you agree to let the baker take the fake cake back at the end of your event, they are willing to offer you a good price as they can then use that cake again and again for display in their shop, for shows, or even for other weddings if it fits the clients’ needs.
