A Fall Feast

June 20th, 2009 by

I have been looking forward to our menu tasting since the day we booked our venue.  My side of the family is Italian so we love food and lots of it. But Italians are also very set in their ways when it comes to food. When we have events they are at the same banquet hall (because the owner is usually a family member) and you are served the same meal: anti-pasto, pasta, meat and seafood.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Italian food! But I find these meals have become very repetative and predictable and those aren’t feelings we want associated with our wedding meal.

A Fall inspired feast

After we booked our venue a new chef took over and they hosted an open house for clients to come for drinks and to indulge in the new chef’s creations.  We feasted on mini burgers, mini eclairs, butternut squash wontons and pear and chocolate filled pastry straws – complete indulgence!

When we sat down to develop our menu we stressed that we wanted to keep it Fall inspired and I was so thrilled to see what the chef had come up with for us to taste:

Appetizers: Mini onion tartlets with goat cheese, Dijon marinated lamb skewers and Nicoise bites (a crisp pastry square with olive oil poached tuna, back olives, capers and sun dried tomatoes).

Soup: Pumpkin voloute with a drizzle of pumpkin oil and roasted pumpkin seeds

Salad: Market greens with dried apples, walnuts and cheese

Main: Braised short ribs with garlic mashed potatoes and green beens or Cornish hen with savoury bread pudding and heirloom beets

Dessert: Flourless chocolate mousse cake – it has the look of a brownie but the consistancy of mousse

Midnight Station: Mini burgers with build-your-own Poutine. For those of you who have never heard of Poutine (its a Canadian concoction) you take french fries and cover them with cheese curds and gravy – sinfully delicious!!

Everything we tasted was phenomenal. I think we have come up with the perfect menu that will offer our guests a refreshing change while still providing them with a delicious gourmet meal to remember. I can’t wait until to sit down with all my family and friends and enjoy a great feast together.

I would love to know what other Buds have planned for their menus and what item(s) they are looking most forward to!

That sounds yummy! (except the Poutine part- I’m a little unsure about that….)

I recommend everyone tries Poutine once in their lifetime!
Who doesn’t love french fries, gravy or cheese? So why not put them together for a very unhealthy but delicious treat!

Traditionally it is made with fresh cheese curds, but you can also use shredded cheddar or even mozzerella cheese. You need to use something that will melt so when you put the gravy on it melts and covers the fries.

Its a pretty common snack here and you can usually find it at most restaurants or pubs here.
