DIY Project: Veil

April 18th, 2009 by BridalBuds
I mentioned awhile back that my sister was going to make my veil. This past weekend, we arrived at the fabric store, looking for tulle to make a veil. After searching the place, we didn’t think they had any ivory tulle at the right size for the project. Apparently, white veils are much more popular. After almost giving up, we found one tiny bolt stuck at the back of the store. It looked to be about two yards, but we weren’t quite sure. She held it up to her own head, so that I could see how long it was. I started to cry! Can you believe it? Months of being pretty certain that this whole thing wasn’t going to phase me, and just seeing a piece of tulle had me in tears. We had a big hug, and bought the piece (which measures closer to 3 yards).

After the trial of the fabric store, who would have thought that it would be twice as hard to find a metal comb? They seem to have lost their place in the every day hair accessory world. We looked at no less than 8 stores, only to find a blue plastic comb and ones priced beyond belief (why would a store charge $70 for a wire comb and a few beads? No joke!). Our intention was to finish the veil this past weekend, but we came up empty handed. We did trim the bottom a bit but it’s not complete just yet.

When I returned to NYC, I found a bridal fabric store that had several of them, in every color, shape, and size. Of course.

What is the best thing about the veil (aside from my sister making it)? Total cost: $12. I know you’re going to think I’m nuts, but we purchased the tulle at 50% off sale for $4. The comb was $7. I didn’t want anything else added to it, so just a simple stitch to attach it to the comb and we’re all set. I couldn’t believe it myself. If you want to wear a veil, I highly suggest looking into making your own. It will save you a bundle. At one bridal salon they were going to charge me $300 for the cheapest available.

I will post photos when we actually finish it.

I had mentioned my mom made mine. We found combs at Joann’s Fabric store in the wedding aisle. I think they might have them at Hobby Lobby too!
