DIY: Envelope Liners

Envelope liners are a simple way to add a pop of color to your mailings. I made these to go with my DIY thank you cards. They’re so simple, I bet a kindergartner could make them!
Here are the supplies I used:

  • Lokta Magenta paper from Paper Source. Hot pink is one of our wedding colors, and I love the texture of the handmade Nepalese paper. Any decorative or even wrapping paper would work.
  • 4 bar envelopes in Luxe Fino Cream from Paper Source. They match the foldover cards and are a substantial weight with a lovely texture. I love the pointed flaps too!
  • Envelope liner template kit from Paper Source. The existence of this kit is what sold me on lining envelopes! They’re tailored to Paper Source’s sizes and styles.
  • Double-sided tape dispenser from Target. You can also use a glue stick if you like.
  • Good scissors. Very important!
  • Pencil.

1. Using the appropriate envelope liner template, trace around the template using a pencil.

2. Cut out the envelope liner along the lines you just traced.

3. Slide the envelope liner into the envelope and fold the top “triangle” down, making a crease where the envelope folds.

4. Using double-sided tape or glue stick, apply sticky stuff to the top two sides of the “triangle.”

5. Fold the “triangle” back and press the sticky sides down. You’re done!

For those who would like a detailed video demonstration, you can find one here. And for people who aren’t using the Paper Source envelopes and templates, here’s a tutorial on how to make your own.

It is amazing how much more sophisticated the invitation looks with a simple envelope liner. Thanks for the tip!

Funny, I spent 3 hours last night lining envelopes for my thank you cards! I thought I was pretty smart – I used some leftover green wrapping paper. It works really well because it’s very thin, cheap, and white on the back, which means it doesn’t show through an ivory envelope. Another tip – if you don’t want to buy a template, just sacrifice an envelope and cut the shape out! A pair of decorative scissors can also add a nice touch for the pointed flap portion.

Nice idea! To bad I already sealed my envelopes for mailing lol. But maybe a nice something to do for my thank yous.

Thanks everyone! I didn’t do it for my invitations because I felt like there was enough going on with them already, but it would be a great option for that too.
