Engagement Picture “Regrets”

March 21st, 2009 by

Although me and Calla Lily Dude don’t consider ourselves to be the most photogenic people in the world, let me start off by saying that I am VERY HAPPY with how our engagement pictures turned out.

But, I do have some “regrets.” By “regrets” I don’t mean “this was a mistake and I wish I had never done it,” I mean more like “I’m very happy, but I wish I had done a few things differently so I could be extremely happy.”

“Regret” #1: Not voicing my thoughts to our photographer

My friends and family think of me as pretty up front about what I think, but I can definitely take a back seat and keep my opinions to myself when I think it necessary. In the case of our engagement photos, it was not necessary, so I wish I had spoken up when I had ideas about certain shots.

Of course, our photographer had some brilliant ideas that translated into gorgeous photos.

“Regret” #2: Not talking to Calla Lily Dude more

So, me and Calla Lily Dude have had a few breakdowns in communication over the course of wedding planning, and (sadly) our engagement photos were no exception. Since Calla Lily Dude is a professional Magic the Gathering player, I had the idea to use some cards as props in our engagement pictures.

I had mentioned it in passing, so we had never really talked about it. On the day of our pictures, he let me know that he didn’t want to use any props. I was a little sad about this, but my disappointment could have been avoided by actually asking him about it rather than assuming it would be okay.

“Regret” #3: Better timing

We kept putting off and then rescheduling our photo shoot (and our photographer was great about it all!), so it was pretty cold outside when we finally did take them and the foliage wasn’t in ideal condition. I do wish the grass was greener and the sky bluer, but I think they did make for nice fall pictures.

Luckily, the weather was nice enough even if it was chilly, but I think we could have done some things differently in warmer (translation: more comfortable) weather. On the other hand, I wouldn’t have worn my favorite trench coat and Calla Lily Dude wouldn’t have worn his favorite jacket in warmer weather, and I love the shots in our outerwear turned out.

So, a few minor “regrets” about our engagement photos, but nothing that ruined the experience or overall quality of the final product. I guess I just wish I could have done more because I had so much fun taking our engagement photos.

They’re beautiful! You both look so happy in them. :)

I think they look great! I like to think of the e-photo shoot as practice for the wedding photos. Now you know to voice your opinion about different shots on the “big day”. When talking to our Wedding Photographer on the phone the other day, he said he loved it when people shot out ideas to him. They usually dont know you 100% and if you dont put your character and personality into the photo shoot…you tend to look stiff. Thats how I felt Dandelion Dude and I looked in most our shots. But now we know. Overall…I think you two look awesome and the bridge picture is really cool!

I love these photos! You look great but I agree with voicing your opinion and making sure to communicate. All very good tips!

If relation is to work, husband is being beatdown and control.
