Takes the Cake |

I know it sounds crazy, but our cake vendor is one of the very first vendors we booked. Plumeria Dude and I are both big fans of dessert, and we knew we wanted our cake to be memorable. While my decor skills are lacking, I love to bake and have inflicted many a recipe on Plumeria Dude over the years. As a native Baltimorean, he even knows people who work at Charm City Cakes, the featured bakery on Ace of Cakes. Despite how awesome the fondant creations of Charm City and other bakeries look, we knew we wanted buttercream frosting, which in my opinion is way tastier.
Once we decided to get married in Islamorada, there were only a few options available to us. We could go for a perfectly serviceable grocery store cake from Publix. As a Florida girl, I grew up eating Publix baked goods and they’re pretty tasty. They get good reviews from brides and are definitely the budget-friendly option. In fact, we may end up getting a groom’s cake from Publix– I’m sure that will be another post.
Another choice could have been Key West Cakes. They have a great reputation and an impressive design portfolio. Their prices are also on the steep side, and the delivery charge from Key West to Islamorada would have truly busted our budget. We also could have looked into bringing a cake down from Miami, but that would’ve incurred similar delivery charges.
So we decided to go with the Islamorada favorites, Bob’s Bunz. Yes, the name is hilarious, and yes, their cinnamon buns are truly transcendent. On a venue-scouting trip last May, we had the good fortune of sampling Bob’s goodies in person. Let me just tell you that fantastic does not even begin to cover it! We sampled all of their flavors and decided to go with a combination. Each slice will have one layer of chocolate cake and one layer of key lime cake with raspberry filling and key lime icing. It sounds very jumbled but believe me, it is so rich and flavorful.
As far as designs go, this is still a work in progress.
We’re thinking a variation on this design:

With tonal dots on the tiers.
I’m still trying to decide if the colors should be hot pink, lime green, orange or a mix of all three. We’ll figure it out eventually, and I know it will taste great no matter what we choose.
