My Hat, Sir

January 16th, 2009 by Pansy Bud

I’m not really a veil-y sort of girl. In my book, a veil spells traditional. Like everyone else, I’m doing my very best to set my wedding apart from every other wedding. Oh the irony. I want it to be more original, more creative, more special, more me than any other wedding ever was.

I want to wear a hat. As I understand it, it’s not so uncommon in the South. I live in the North. I have yet to attend a wedding and see a bride in a hat, and I think it suits me just perfectly.  The problem is, I can’t afford any of the hats that I love. Turns out, a good hat is expensive, and may not be in our budget.

I want a white, wide-brimmed (and I mean WIDE) horsehair hat. The material is less important than the style and the color. I adore this hat by Kokin at Neiman Marcus. It just went on sale, an additional 40% off of $200. Which isn’t entirely out of reach for me, except that they only have it left in black.

Just so you get an idea of what exactly is going through my head, and since Pansy Dude doesn’t read my blog. Here is my DRESS!!

I think a hat with this dress would be stunning and unexpected. You can’t really tell from the picture but there is a jacquard print on the dress.

What do you think? Am I just going to look silly? We’re getting married outside at a country club and I intend to take it off after the ceremony.

If anyone has some insight into hat purchasing or maybe you’ve been to a wedding with a bride in a hat, I would love whatever advice you could spare. I’m finding that they are all upwards of $250. Is that pretty standard?

My mother wore a hat for her wedding and it was very chic! I wish I had a pic online that I could share. I think it would set off your dress fabulously.

I love your dress. I think a hat will look gorgeous with that.

I myself considered a hat, my dress is black and I have a black hat I wanted to wear. But on second thought I decided it wouldn’t look right. However, I think your idea of a hat, especially with that dress, is fabulous. You go girl.

My mom also wore a hat. Here’s was more 70’s but very cute. It has withstood the test of time and she looked beautiful.

If you have any upscale designer consignment shops in your area, check them out. I always find cool accessories like hats at the ones near where I live.
