DIY: Wedding Invitations with Word

January 14th, 2009 by

I fell in love with gorgeous copper-colored paper from Paper And More, so I got both the text-weight paper and matching cardstock to meet all of my DIY stationary and décor needs.

Since I bought the paper by itself and not with an invitation kit, I had to create my own template, and did so using Microsoft Word. All I did was find out the common dimensions of wedding invitations and envelopes and then created a text box to match the size I wanted to use.

You can create a text box by selecting Text Box from the Insert menu or clicking on the Text Box icon, then drag the cursor to the size you want. To format the text box, double click on the outline to open the Format Text Box menu and make the changes that you want, such as changing the size, inside color (fill), position, or outline.

You can get more tips and a visual tutorial for using text boxes in Word here.

Using this method, you can create one per page or several per page, whatever meets your printing needs. I went with tea-length (longways, 3 1/4″ x 8 1/2″) invitations, so my template was three per page (on 8 1/2″ x 11″ paper).

I created a different template for my invitations, thank you cards, favor tags, and announcements. After whipping up a handy template, print a test page on regular printer paper and cut it to size to see if everything works out.

This DIY project was a lot more simple than I thought it would be, and it saved me tons of money (estimated savings of $200-300)!!!!

Anyone else going the DIY route for their invitations?

I was thinking of doing so. The only thing that is putting me off is that I wud like the background to have a picture of a peony… now where can i get that picture? :) hahahaha i might have to start searching high and low for it… it is not really pricey to print wed cards at the shops… major setback is that your creativity is limited because they’re the ones designing your card… i prefer to be able to do major tweaking to whatever i choose…

Hey Borneo – check out http://www.shutterstock.com for images, they’re cheap and there are lots to choose from! I also use it to draw inspiration then create my own images. I like that you’re making your own invites Calla Lily, I look forward to hearing about the envelopes you choose. I’m making my own in Photoshop, stay tuned for posts about that!

I love Word! It makes diy projects so easy. I made my wedding programs with word and paper from Paper & More. I love that site because you can order samples to make sure you pick out the perfect paper. They will also cut the paper to the size you want. Piece of cake!

Hello! Can you please let me know how did you get the design on the flowers onto the paper? Did it come with the paper?

    Thanks@
