Chowing Down

January 22nd, 2009 by

The one aspect of wedding planning that Calla Lily Dude was excited about was the catering, so he was thrilled that we had a tasting with our caterer this week. Without even considering other caterers, we wanted to go with one of our favorites, the best BBQ restaurant in our area, Ludy’s Main Street BBQ & Catering.

We love their food and Ludy’s will cater events ANYWHERE in California, so this came in handy since our wedding will be in Oakland, about an hour and half away from Woodland, where the restaurant is located. Better yet, they offer the best guarantee in catering that I have ever heard of: If your food is not hot and on-time or if there is not enough food to feed your guests, it’s free. (Translation: Our food will be hot, on-time, and plentiful.)

Why BBQ, you ask? Since our wedding falls during Labor Day weekend and both of our families typically BBQ on Labor Day, we thought it would be enjoyable for our guests to have delicious BBQ at our wedding. I think BBQ also fits with the intimate family and friends vibe we are going for. Plus, I am not above chowing down on some pork ribs in my wedding dress. Maybe I can pull off the stunning-while-eating-ribs-look like Padma Lakshmi.

Having never hired a caterer or done a tasting before, I had no idea what to expect, so this was a great article that helped me prepare for the meeting/tasting with our caterer. We got to sample several different menu items and discuss the details of the wedding. Judy, the catering director (yes, Judy at Ludy’s), was super friendly and answered most of my questions before I even had to ask. She even gave Calla Lily Dude a few extra pork ribs, much to his delight.

Doing a tasting is not only an opportunity to try out your wedding menu, it is also a chance to see how your caterer works and get all your questions answered.

What are you folks in the Bridal Buds community doing to feed the hungry masses at your wedding?

That sounds yummy and fun! Since I had a destination wedding, I didn’t get to do any tastings. :( I was lucky and everything turned out fine, but I missed out on all the fun!

Just as an added idea, when you go to Ludy’s to plan it, I think it would be a great idea to cut down the ribs into smaller pieces. This way it would be easier to manage (aka less messy) so there’s more margin for error in case something falls on the side. Not only that, it’s a brilliant idea that you’re incorporating comfort foods like different types of BBQ like ordering a ton of the BBQ combo (beef/pork), some chicken combos (with the half links), and a ton of sides. If you want it to look a bit fancy @ the reception area, you can also hire a wait staff (there are always @ least 2 good agencies that provide this service per locality). A lot of these agencies may also provide serving trays and plates to make the presentation more elegant.

I have to say – This sounds like one wedding I would love to attend. Those sticky ribs got me thinkin’….

The guarantee that they are offering is huge. It will be a comforting feeling knowing you don’t have anything to worry about and it will be perfect. Best Wishes!

I love Ludy’s!!!! I went to school at UC Davis, so Ludy’s was a fixture at college. I am so jealous! I live in Boston now, so no Ludy’s for me. That’s great that they’ll cater in Oakland. I know a few friends who will freak at this…

GO AGS!!! Calla Lily Dude and I met at UC Davis, and we’ll be doing our engagement pics on campus in the Arboretum, behind Dutton Hall, and the phone booth at the MU! We go to Ludy’s at least once a month!!!

When we got married last August we had a BBQ it was so much fun and everyone loved the choices.
We didn’t want a formal sit down meal or a simple buffet luckily my husband is English and we got married in Durham, England and there is a company that specialises in bbq wedding catering here is the site for anyone wanting to be inspired http://www.barbecuecaterer.com
