After we got engaged, one of the first unknowns hanging over Plumeria Dude and me was choosing where to hold the wedding. It’s harder than it sounds; I grew up in Florida but only a few family members still live there. The rest are scattered across the US along with many of our friends. Plumeria Dude’s family is largely concentrated in Maryland. And we’d been living in Atlanta for the majority of our relationship.
His parents, of course, pressed for Maryland. Mine voted for Florida. And Plumeria Dude and I argued for an Atlanta wedding– midway between our families, easily accessible and convenient to plan. To add to the confusion, around the time of our engagement, our families were going through some health and job-related issues that made planning a year in advance difficult at best.
After much back and forth, we ended up choosing Florida, but going with Islamorada instead of my hometown. That meant we’d signed on for a destination wedding and all the inherent joys and difficulties.
How did you choose your wedding location?

So sorry to hear that you had such a rough go of choosing a venue! It’s all downhill from there. (Ok, I lie. But, I hope the decisions to come are easier.)
Why did you decide on Islamorada instead of your hometown?
I was in a similar position, wanting to have it in the large city we live in while my parents wanted me to have it in my hometown. I despise my hometown. Funny though, small towns are less expensive than big cities. Necessity breeds…. well, compromise I many cases.
Now that you have the largest part nailed down- you can get to work on making it wonderful!
Cheers!

Once we did decide on a venue, everything did fall into place pretty well.
We chose Islamorada because there is a lot more for guests to do there than my hometown, which is pretty but very dull. Also the Keys have a wonderful Caribbean vibe that you just can’t replicate elsewhere. My family has vacationed there a bunch over the years, and once we brought Plumeria Dude down for a visit, he was sold too.

Tulip dude and I live 4 hours apart. It’s not too far, but we decided to get married somewhere in between.

We got married in my parent’s hometown though not where I grew up. His parent’s don’t live too far away from where we married (next town over). Thankfully, it was a good middle ground for our almost entirely out of town guest list.
