Every guide to planning a wedding that I have found online and in print say the very first thing you should do is to search for and book the venue… For all the planning I did early on in the process, we didn’t check this biggie off of the to-do list until about a year and a half into our engagement.
Why the long wait? Well, having grown up next to a recreation center where I witnessed many a wedding taking place, I really wanted to have our wedding at a Parks & Recreation facility. We’ll be getting married In Oakland, CA, my partner’s hometown, because he still feels very connected to Oakland although we live in Davis, CA. As it turns out, Oakland Parks & Rec only take reservations up to 11 months in advance, so we had no choice but to wait…
And we ended up booking the Lake Merritt Sailboat House!!!!!

I’ll admit, I don’t think it’s much to look at from the outside, but the interior has floor to ceiling windows for a panoramic view of Lake Merritt, my favorite place in Oakland. With having an evening ceremony and reception here, the nighttime view of Lake Merritt is gorgeous!
Parks & Rec facilities are a great option for weddings because they are relatively inexpensive, usually don’t catering restrictions, and you are helping your community. However, do your research because Parks & Rec facilities do not offer things a catering hall or hotel might have included, such as linens and waitstaff, so you have to take this into consideration when choosing a venue…
Lastly, I encourage you NOT to wait to book your venue if you don’t have to. I could have planned a lot more stuff while I was waiting… Happy venue hunting!
