First Thing’s First

December 16th, 2008 by

Once we became engaged, the first thing we did was start researching the process of wedding planning. To be honest, while I had come across a lot of interesting ideas on blogs, I hadn’t really found a lot of practical information about where to start and what steps to take. So we spent an afternoon at Barnes and Noble perusing the wedding planning section. Don’t laugh, but one of the books I ended up finding really helpful was Wedding Planning for Dummies.

Several of the books agreed that a good place to start is talking with your fiance about your ideal wedding and your priorities. I’m sure that deciding which aspects of the day are really important to the two of us will help later when it came time to make difficult decisions about budgets, guests and vendors. It can also be a good exercise in negotiation and compromise, which will come in useful for the rest of our lives together!

Thankfully, it turned out that Lotus Dude and I happen to have a lot of the same ideas about priorities. Our priorities are photography, good food, and convenience for ourselves and our guests. While we certainly want things to look aesthetically pleasing, decor and invites are not as much of a priority for us. Of course, in an ideal world, we wouldn’t have to compromise on anything. But compromise is a reality for most of us!

You are totally right! Most bridal blogs are just random gatherings of ideas. Someone needs to step up and change the game – wait! Someone already did!

I’ll have check that book out! I got engaged 9 months ago and while I’ve seen all sorts of nice little details on wedding blogs, I feel like I don’t know where to start – and my fiance…bwahahahah he’s like ‘um, let me know when you start making decisions so I can be included’ which actually means ‘do all the planning first, then we can talk about it’ lol. Plus he’s in Brooklyn and I’m in Boston so we’re a bit…uh…scattered I guess. I think this blog and all everyone’s recommendations and individual experiences will be so helpful. I’m bookmarking you now!!

I am so glad I decided to check this out. For my fiance’ and myself it is our second wedding. Believe it or not I never thought I would get married again. I thought I should know what I want, but both of us were a so confused. The book I really like is; Intimate Weddings: Planning a Small Wedding that Fits Your Budget and Syle. I got some really good idea’s on ways to save money. By changing the time to a morning/early afternoon wedding I saved a ton of money. The time is also much better for my out of town guests. My family is from up north, and we live in PA. It is so nice to know other people are confused with what they want for a wedding when they start planning.
